Cees, what does the cork do? Only for fixed gear bikes?

to have a even surface for the tyre
then you do not also need tyre tape
its lighter also
and makes the hole's preventing water come's in
but the main reason even surface better tyres seat
beleive me can make a differance to prevent tyre roll off problems also with flats

You use corks instead of rim tape. It doesn't increase the diameter of the rims be like tape does, making tire installation easier. It requires more time than most people are willing to spend on their wheels. There is no ready made cork that is the right size. You can get corks for a hobby shop or drug store and the lenth has to be cut to size.

I have been using synthetic tapes like the Mavic and Specialized strips because they are readily available and easy to install. They are thinner than tape so tire installation is not difficult. As often as I ride in the rain I just drain the wheels.

The Open Pro rim uses full eyelets, there are steel edges on the outside of the eyelet that would still flat the tube. Open Pro rims also have a deep enough deck to make tire mounting easy, even with a layer of cloth rim strip. As for tire support or role off, the tire doesn't contact that surface at all, and we're talking about a non-issue with the tube. If your clinchers are rolling off, cork ain't gonna help.

This is a tubular rim technique from the old days before ferruled rims. Back when you'd have this hole, sometimes quite large, on the tire bed of the rim, you'd stuff a cork into it (no puns, please) and use a round rasp to knock it down flush with the surface of the tire bed. Then when you glued over it, you had more surface to glue and the sharp edges of the hole weren't going to wear cuts in the tire base tape. Sometimes when you pulled the tire off it took a cork or two with it, but on a percentage basis you have to figure it did hold the tire more solidly and at least marginally reduced rolled tires.

With clinchers that don't have a ferrule it can still offer some benefit, but you usually need to use the rim tape anyway. They might let you get away with an ultra-thin rim tape but I'd be skeptical about omitting the rim tape.

About the only non-ferruled clincher rims I can think of these days are Velocity's, and they have those little plugs to fill the holes neatly (a better solution than the cork). I wouldn't recommend the plugs with tubulars (assuming you used a rim that fit them) because the plugs don't hold glue all that well.

I don't really think there's a meaningful benefit for corking with clinchers. Cees may have been pulling your leg.

well for track is usefull
i do not say its abosolute neccery but it helps
becuase if you use tape the tyre is going laying a bit higher
and it only helps has a lot advantage
also safe you for rust that occours if water stays beteen tape spoke
if it is filled with cork you do not have that problem

in my mind this is a track wheel once in a while used as a road wheel
that's why my tip
if it was a regular road wheel and regular changed tyres
i would not say that becuase with tyre removal you also vent the water
