My 17 year-old daughter owns/rides/shows horses and for a while she thought about finding a way to make a career in the horse world.

It's a really hard life with little pay in relation to the effort involved (including working as an equine vet) and my advice to her was to keep her hobby and career separate. Find a job/career that is personally rewarding and pays well and carve out time for your hobby.

Sounds like the bike industry isn't too different.

Plenty of oportunities to make a small fortune.
All you need to start is a large fortune, though.
