I'm using a threadless adapter with a shim to run a 1 1/8" stem but have run into a problem.

The Thomson shim I got needs a 1 1/8" top cap but the bolt/bolt hole on those is too small for the Deda quill adapter bolt. Hope the pic makes things clearer.

The silver shim I pulled off another bike to show how I avoided this problem but can't find one in black or even how to search for them.

How do I make it all work aside from drilling out a 1 1/8" top cap to fit the Deda quill bolt?

I disassembled another bike just to get the shim for comparison so thats a no go. I need 2 of those essentially.

Use a quill stem, like God intended? Or buy a ledged shim. Or use a Deda 1 1/8th top cap as one assumes those might be sized to work with their quill adapter?

As others mentioned, time to break out your re-anodization tool:

IF you're using a quill adapter, that Thomson stem doesn't NEED a cap at all.

The stem needs a cap when that cap is being used to pre-load the headset bearings of a threadless setup. A 1" cap won't fit over the stem in that case, and won't work. With a threaded headset and quill adapter, there is no need for a cap at all.

You just install the adapter in the threaded headset/steerer, torque it down, and install your threadless stem and shim onto the adapter. No funny caps or anything required.

To simplify things, you could just get a 1 1/8" quill adapter and eliminate that shim entirely.

I think Vinci has the best answer. But one other option is to buy a long bolt with a narrower head. They're made - some of non-QR wheel skewers use bolts with a long head. I found one on ebay United Kingdom as I needed a longer wheel skewer than what came stock a few years back.

I can't help at all but I like that you used the word shenanigans. Good work.
