What's the largest cog a Shimano 105 9sp rear derailleur (RD5500) can accommodate with 53/39 chainrings up front? I'm considering gearing for my Poprad for this years D2R2, and would like to use a 11-32 or 11-34 cassette if possible.

Thanks.

Probably 28-30 depending on derailleur hanger and b-screw adjustments.

at least a 32 for sure, i had a 30 on one of my bikes and there was definitely room for a couple more teeth,

It depends on the frame's hanger. I've seen guys get a 32t MTB cassette to work with the B screw all the way in. I've never had a problem with a 28t myself. That said 9sp med cage MTB mechs are cheap and work perfectly for that kinda setup.

Pick up a 9 speed long cage mountain derailleur from ebay and you can go up to 34 no problem. I've bought two in the last 18 months, one was $40 and the other was $22. For that kind of money, pick one up and ride whatever cassette you want.

Bradford is 100% correct - use an MTB R-der and you can go all the way to 34. Also, any 9-spd Shimano shifter will work fine, STI or DT.

The rear der has to be spec'd for a 36t cog.

Standard SGS Shimano 9 R. D. won't generally handle 36 tooth cog? My recollection is I have run that combo no prob., no specially spec'd R.D. But my mind is cluttered with things other than sun and tequilla.

Yeah. My experience with my wife's bike trying to get an XT and a Deore der (both rated for a 34t cog) to work with her 36t cassette bore no fruit. I finally bought a derailleur rated for 36 which worked perfectly.

Lotsa sun here but I'm easy on the Tequila, too much fishing.

it is, at best, a crap shoot with non-Shadow R.D. I think when I did it I went to the bolt store a got an extra long b screw.

I too have had this issue. Right now I have the original screw turned in as far as it can go (old, non-shadow XT R-der and a 12-34 cassette) and I'm just marginally good.

I'm sure it will but are there any 9s corsets that end with a 36?

Putting a pretty standard MTB 9s rear der onto a 10s road STI setup, with 11-36, very common...like a Deore or LX...so if ya find a 11-36 9s cogset, matched to a 9s MTB rear der-works fine.

If some are finding the need for a uber long b limit screw, I suspect the chain might be one link too long...might...be careful with chain length and big-big...

The auto-correct feature strikes again!

You can also get a 38T for the front from FSA. I know 1T isn't much, but it may help. I ran 38T/28T with my 9-speed ultegra.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Looks like I'll be pickup a MTB derailleur.
