It's the Giro. The tifosi are infamous. The best moment was in 2001, when Fassa Bortolo's Wladimir Belli punched a cousin of race leader Gilberto Simoni. Belli was, unfortunately, tossed.

What do the racers themselves think about the sections where huge crowds on both sides of a climb narrow the road down to just a tiny path, and actually block it off in front, only to give way at the last second when the rider is practically on top of them?

I would find it really annoying. I'm sure all the cheering gives them a rush and is great motivation, but looking up to see nothing but a bunch of folks blocking the road ahead would be disconcerting.

(If you guys ever want to come cheer me on, LMK and I'm sure we can set something up to test it. ;) )

That's what chafes my arse. If the riders push or hit the a-holes that are screaming in their faces while running in front of them it is the rider that gets tossed. There are tons of motor bikes hiding behind the riders doing little to help open a path.

I thought it was really strange how, not far up the climb, they had rows of police/military with linked hands, holding back the crowds.
