View Full Version : This seems like an expensive way to achieve unnecessary precision

I'm a big fan of getting my wheel straight, but I'm not sure I'd spend $100 to get it perfect.

If you're a Princess-And-The-Pea type, I can see the use for this.

That is actually a pretty cool little fabrication project. I hope that was an engineering student's course project....

wonder if it'll do saddles?

THERE'S the place for accuracy

I could make this on my rapid prototyper for about $10. Anyone want to buy one?

also, can we please keep in mind that tune is also the company responsible for the $240 carbon coffee mug (http://fairwheelbikes.com/tune-coffee-mug-p-5754.html)...

Something that does bars and saddles for $15 or less and I'm in.

Now I need a cheaper option here too.

Seen this before. Works for me. The cash saved from the lazer buys tires and booze:hello:

That mug is wicked light, and drinking from it adds 3.7 watts to your threshold.

Tune has long been one of those "We'll build it because we're German, and we can" kind of outfits. Common sense be damned. I'm totally in favor of that.

I'm an outlier.. From years of travel with BMX and working in a few bike shops, I purposefully misalign, so I don't drive myself crazy. Lately, I adjust so that when the bars are straight the bike turns a bit right, kind of a safety feature for the road...

Today is a day of mind blowingness. First I read about a guy hitting a kangaroo and think that's got to be the oddest thing I'll learn about today, and then I see a $240 coffee mug. The world is pretty awesome (and I mean that sincerely).

I'll prolly buy one. One of the side effects of my brain injury was severe diplopia. I can't for the life of me park a car properly in an angled or straight parking, much less mount a stem inline with a front tire.

Yes I'd absolutely buy one from your rapid prototyper.

And for you guys who think you always do it dead on you should look with one I closed and when you think you have it right try... the other eye.

Personally, I think shops should be required to have one as they seem to get this right about 15% of the time.

I'll buy a $10 (or thereabouts) version. And it would be awesome if it worked on saddles too.

And if Rapha marketed this for $250 people would be lining up for one.

Sorta like that $250 corkscrew by a certain Italian company? (I want one)

I was thinking the same thing...only question would be where to source a laser that's properly centered, I'd imagine most of the cheap ones won't be.

Wouldn't it burn a hole in the tire?

This is something I've always been pretty picky about. Picky enough that, for the last 15 years, I've wanted to build a fixture that would consist of an adjustable 80/20 beam with a dummy axle on one end and a dummy handlebar (tube) on the other.

You would insert the axle, extend the beam up to the handlebar and clamp the dummy h'bar tube into the stem, ensuring that the bar and axle were perfectly parallel. Snug down the steer tube bolts, insert the handlebar and wheel and away you go. Obviously, this would do nothing to correct an improperly dished wheel or misaligned fork.

But I haven't been so picky that I ever took the time to make said fixture... oh well, maybe someone here will take the time to do it? Probably not practical for the home mechanic, but could be a great tool for a retail shop.

Cheers,
KP

I saw this yesterday and wanted to try it, but no laser pointer. So I used a laser printer instead. Didn't work.
