I think Andy had snow on Gavia? Whenever I try Stelvio it has snow flurries, but to be fare I always ride it in September.

I did it in 1998. The road was clear and only chilly at the top, but there were people skiing way above us. It's a real mind f@@@ when you're climbing and think you're near the top and see people skiing another 1000 vertical feet or so above you...as if the climb still has aways to go...then you make a turn and see where the road cuts thru and you see the village. Nice climb.

Yes...the Gavia...the good stuff (in Italian) kicks in about 30 seconds into the video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5wPEymv-oQ

When i last rode the "Giro Dolomiti" (Tourist/Amateur stage race) in 2010, the TT to the Stelvio had to stop at Trafoi around 2000m because there the snow started.
That event is held in the first week of August - so no guarantee whatsoever at the Stilfser :)

(btw there is a Beijing gold medalist on the second picture :D)

IMHO, he's the best cycling photographer working presently.

Close, but no cigar ;)

It is Wolfgang Sacher, Paralympic gold, silver and bronze-medallist

Dunno if Gruber is the single best, although he gets my vote for top 5. His images are consistently stunning. Like this one from yesterday's "la polemica":
