Lots of locomotives were put in mothballs when the economic downturn hit hard. Hundreds if I remember correctly. Speculation was that they would never come out of mothballs. Guess they were wrong.

Ironically, we stopped in Scottsburg, Indiana, for lunch on Saturday. Railroad crossing in downturn was blocked because a couple of rail cars had derailed. It was a long train of mostly car carriers. Regularly see many more car carrier trains coming through Indianapolis than we used to. Thought it might be traffic from the new Honda Civic plant in Greensburg, IN, but guess it could also be from increased overall traffic.

In my neck of the woods it's all coal trains. They ship a lot of oil on rail too.

As for a new car I'll never buy a new car ;)
