why did he ride for mercury? why did he leave? it seems like riders such as van petegem typically ride for a big euro team and don't really sign for teams like mercury..............

Before implosion, Mercury was trying to be one of those big teams.

to contest the Classics and most other major events. LeMond
was the bike sponsor. The other major sponsor (who I can't
recall.....high-tech company of some sorts) pulled out causing
the team to fold because of lack of money.

Ricardo is still working. My kids watched Spy kids the other night and he had a good role as the grandfather. Every time I see him though all I can think of is rich corinthian leather.

I had a friend who had a Chrysler New Yorker. It was a hand-me-down from his grandmother and the "rich corinthian leather" was perfect. We'd cruise Whittier Blvd in that beast.

The team was Mercury Viatel

Van P signed because they gave him a good contract.

The team did well enough to qualify for the Tour and the Tour screwed them. Without a tour spot, Viatel wasn't interested.


That was actually a pretty good team...
