I was just curious, my second hand R45 wheelset really makes no noise. Not that I'm complaining, I'm just use to them waking up the neighbors.

Pulled them apart for a cleaning, then back together. Spins nicely, but freewheels very quietly.

Any reason why? - AJ

The R45's that I have are certainly quieter than Kings of old, but still have a romantic buzz. I would guess the more lubed it is, the quieter it might be.

I had the classics prior to the R45's....could use another wheelset:cool:

And, the little extra lube could be the culprit as well. Does spin smooth though.

my 2nd pair is also rather quiet, and doesn't spin very well. CK recommends 60 hours of running/breaking in, is this true? the first pair i got was loud from the start and does not have that sticky feel. confused :p

I had 2 R45 rear hubs and one was silent and seemed like the ring drive was sticking. I cleaned all the ring drive lube off and replaced with mobil 1. That and some extra break-in miles allowed the angry bee to return but the R45 is a much quieter hub than the classic.

If I were in your shoes I would bow to the Freewheel Gods and thank them for keeping the angry bees away.

What exactly is "breaking in?" Not riding above 15 mph? Putting the bike on the work stand and turning the pedals by hand? No free-wheeling above 10 mph? Just wondering.

I just put a bunch of ring drive lube in my hubs and they are now quiet but spin freely. They do typically get slightly louder with use in my experience but as others have said, the newer hubs are quieter than the old ones.

Yeah, I have to be careful what I wish for.
