View Full Version : Thread Showing after 1770 Miles - Conti GP 4-Seasons

Does 1770 miles seem reasonable for this tire? I was using gatorskins before, which seem to last forever... so maybe I need to adjust my frame of reference.

on the short end of the life-cycle for the rear....where's it showing? centerline or edge?

Center line. pretty well squared off.

Tire longevity depends almost entirely on rider/bike combined weight, with some consideration for road conditions and riding style. Is the tire in question a rear tire? What is the width and tire pressure used? These factors also play into longevity. I formerly used 700x25 GP 4-Seasons on my tandem's race wheels. Rear tires used to last ~1,000 miles under a 300 lb. team.

Yep, rear tire. These were 25s - usually in the 85-100 psi range... and Yep, I'm a fat ass. :help:

Wear is a bit premature. I guess the real question is one of how fast you wear other tires. If they all go fast ... er, I mean, wear fast ...

I am coming up on 1700 miles on the rear 28 mm GP4S on my new Crumpton and the tire still has the centerline flash mark showing in places. ···? I'll never be able to throw that tire away.

Many factors contribute to wear. Compound of the tire, conditions ridden in, rider weight & riding style, etc. Also, we are just coming out of winter, maybe those conditions took it's toll on your tire? Just a guess...

I'm getting over 3000 miles on my 700x25 sets. A little more on the 700x28.

Tire pressure is probably the biggest.

You riding one of those fixie things where you have to skid to stop? :)

Just kidding.

Not to be a hijacker, I just replaced my rear GP 4000S 700x25 with almost 5k on them. I'm happy.

Seems early, I've had 2 sets. the first (28s both sets, 195 lb about 90psi typical) lasted about 4k miles. The second, one blew out the sidewall in 2 weeks riding on rollers. Its mate is still going at about 1k currently. I was disappointed.

Used on trainer (rollers / hamster wheel)?

Hmmm .. but which way?

Higher pressure = wears faster?
or
Higher pressure = wears slower?

Matt is saying its 'squared' off and running 85psi and that he's a pretty big dude, so I'm guessing its on the low end....my recommendation is to ride faster to get more lean in the curves.

Dang, 1700 and you're complaining?

I've used gatorskins in the past, and they seem to last forever. Going to a 'higher' performance tire, I didn't have any expectations. This thread is a sanity check more than a complaint.

"higher performance" sometimes means "less life"
or "higher maintenance," it's great for what you need it for.
The compromise is that you get better performance
while using the product, but it might need replacing or
maintenance during it's life. Like a Ferrari vs a Honda.

Less then 30 miles ...

My new rear Conti GP 4 season tire blew. Sounded like a gun went off.
The carcass separated from the bead creating a 2 inch gash.

I've always had side wall issues with Contis. :help: :butt:

Steve at Saville Road opened up on Sunday and suggested pair of Vittoria
open Corsa CX. Thanks Steve ! :hello:

I think a rider who does a lot of climbing and/or stands up to sprint will wear tires faster than a spinner on level roads. My scientific data supporting opinion is the "swish-swish singing) I hear from the tires of strong riders as they pass me on every climb.

Y-u-p. I need to replace 23mm 4000s at about 1700-1800mi. Mostly because of the many short steep climbs in the backyard, but also due to the hard coarse basaltic gravel they mix in the asphalt. Auto tires don't last very long either.

I got less than 2,000 miles from the last set of 4000's that I ran. I think the chili compound is softer and wears faster. And to the OP, I do lean far when cornering.
