Any advice on how to remove one of these old BBs? Won't fit onto my vice as the stay gets in the way. The BB tool isn't doing it. Only this one side is stuck.
Always hated these types of BBs with lockrings.

Every bike shop in America has the tool to remove that, it's worth whatever they charge to do! The tool is likely more expensive than the labor cost.

Take it to a bike shop. Or, find tools like these. Easier to take it to a bike shop.

I've got the Park wrench but it's not moving. Found this Sheldon Brown reference. May try it and it'll be good to have around for the next one someone asks me to remove.

I used a monkey wrench...the grip was good and the long handle just muscled it off with ease.

Is the Sheldon link the 'big arse bolt n washers' method? That'll work.

Remove bearings etc, and turn the correct way.

I use a bolt and big washer to secure the BB tool to the flats. I then use a Park frame and fork straightener for leverage. They always come off. Some PB Blaster before hand can't hurt.

Remember the fixed side is reverse threaded.

always good practise, huh? Too many times I've looked down and seen blood seeping from my knuckles. Yeeeeeowch.

A headset press can work to hold those tools on to the BB if you've got the right one.

If you have one big enough, an adjustable wrench *can* work too.

If you're R&Ring that BB, this *is* one time the old farmer's 'do whatever it takes to get it out' mantra is OK. ...just don't hose up your frame.

I was rebuilding an older Cannondale MTB and had to replace the BB. Fixed cup wouldn't budge no matter what I did or tool I made, so took it to the LBS for some muscle.

They didn't find a shred of grease in there, suspected it hadn't been greased well (or at all) when first built 20 yr. ago. That makes removal interesting.

Depending on the frame material, of course heat would help also. Putting a torch to a steel frame shouldn't be much of a problem. That of course is a last resort.

I'll third/fourth the big bolt with washers method. I've removed several stuck BB cups with that. I keep one in my toolbox at all times.

I bought a tool years ago that i the elegant version of this method. Works fine.

Put the frame in a vise and use the frame to torque the thing out works aswell.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oa8ztfXcHkgBut won't work on the far superior Italian threading.

I've always used the method that pinkshogun reported where the BB wrench is sandwiched onto the BB cup. Never failed.

If you just reverse the direction of the bolt, it should work just fine (nut on the inside), right?

If you put the bolt backwards it will :P
