Amazing to watch, but can't help but think what would've happened if he caused a car accident, hit a pedestrian, or both. But big huevos on this kid. Some would say stupid, while others would call him daring. California Street in San Francisco is really steep, crowded, and lined with cablecar tracks waiting to capture your skinny tires. And how did he manage to clip in at full speed? Yikes!

What about the cameraman(men)... Maybe two guys on a motorcycle going the wrong way down the street? You can see another cyclist at a cross street looking at them like they were crazy. With the rate they slowed down it looks like they got close to t-boning that cyclist.

his drive side pedal breaks mid bomb. @ around 24 seconds.

Good thing it wasn't a broken chain but at least he'll be easy to find once the cops see the video and issue him a handful of tickets.

How is SF for that sorta stuff. The hill bombing videos i've seen look insane. Cant imagine locals + cops enjoy that very much.

MashSF is definitely one of my fav groups to follow, but I thought they were done with the literal mashing videos.

While not as raw as the Mash video, this video shows an even tougher climb with a crazier, longer descent. They did film it a la Rapha-style, so it won't amaze the kids as much as the Mash video, but I'm impressed! :)

Gee, wow, your really good at something not only lame but really dangerous to others. I'd love to see someone knock him off his bike. Remember the idiot hillbomber that killed an elderly man in a crosswalk in SF not long ago?

Both vids have riders with lots of skill. The difference is if one loses control out in the woods, its probably just themselves they're taking out. The dude cutting in and out of traffic and cutting across the crosswalk with peds in it could just as likely take someone else out with him...just like the SF incident last year. All just to make a "cool" vid.:roll eyes:

Shredding like this kind of gives off the impression that it is okay to ride like that.. I used to do that to until I realized how much I could injure myself or another person.. It's good though, because stuff like this is starting to become less popular than it was 2 years ago!

Sure seems stupid to do that. This video is ridiculous and gives cyclists a bad name.

When my girlfriend, who works in an operating room, sees riding like that or what some guys do on their crotch rockets she simply says the medical world is always short of organ donors. I guess I'd have to agree as long as they don't hurt anyone else in the process. Kinda cold but kinda true!

Amen. It is pretty amazing riding, but I can't help but focus on how stupid it is. He is clearly taking his own life in jeopardy, not to mention the hundreds of others that he is threatening as well. Wiping out and killing yourself on a trail is one thing, but taking out a crowd of people or freaking a driver out so badly that he/she crashes is negligent.

so Po-Mo/YOLO, in a bad way.

California street is super steep, lots of tourists and cars etc. I'm pretty sure I've ever made it down without having to stop at least once. You will 95% of the time have to stop at either Grant (the street he blew the light) or the next street down where the video ends at Kearny ( a major intersection) Really suprised he didn' t hit anyone or get caught up in the trolly tracks near the end where the car pulling into the garage forces him to turn. To sum it all up: Wow, A guy going kinda fast down a hill. Yawn.

I was thinking the same thing.

Years ago I locked up the rear wheel on my road bike for an ~2' long skid and it immediately wore down to the threads. (not sure how much rubber I had on there to begin with, but it wasn't an old tire)

Young guys being reckless. Yikes, when did that start!

On a positive note, almost every kid under 25 I know got into racing or road bikes through a route that intersects MASH. Those videos inspired a lot of kids to dig on bikes and buy a ton of MASH/Golden Saddle/Rapha/Prolly connected gear.

The guys who take the USAC route, well, their dads race.

That's the kind of $^&%$ that give all cyclists a bad name.

I've been down that hill a million times on my bike and worked right there @ Cal. & Kearny, at lunchtime there are a million people working thru the crosswalks.

I'd like to see a car door or a body check temper that right quick. Then see how awesome it is.

I'd love to see someone knock him off his bike.

The pedal doesn't break, but his foot comes unclipped (or it wasn't fully clipped back in). Actually with a bit of practice, it's not TOOO hard to clip back in at that speed - he did it before he was going that fast. But I mostly only unclip to keep my feet out of puddles, and even if I were to ride a fixie with no brakes, I would certainly never unclip while doing so!
Yeah, he has good handling skills. But he's putting them to pretty obnoxious use.

Actually, I think this video is a great example of how no matter how good at skidding you are, skidding will never be as good as a front brake and it is just plain not good enough. If you look at how fast he decelerates, it's clearly not enough to bring him to a full stop at an intersection unless he were to start "braking" halfway up the block. If a bus or something else too big to swerve around pulled out into the intersection, he would hit it even if he had a fair amount of warning... or he'd have to bail.

Now imagine the road is wet.

R3awak3n
05-13-2014, 08:32 PM
But he would also hit that bus with a front brake but definitely be able to slow down faster.

It's a good watch though and why these dudes do it, if it wasn't dangerous nobody would watch this crap, ah, less and less people are already watching it compared to a few years ago

Here are some "Pros" riding up that same hill in kits with gears. I've ridden that hill a few times starting from Lombard St and yes it is hardcore.

Dum...when in the shop, young kid, who rode for JimmyJohns..showed me a really nice Keirin bike he got from Japan..it was beautiful..about an hour later he carried it in with the front wheel pushed back past the downtube..couldn't stop, hit a car..wanted to know it was repairable...dum

Pretty stupid and useless. If you want to kill yourself for the sake of being on Vimeo and featured on Prolly's and Fixesmytosis I have no problem with that. But do so in a way you don't put other's life at risk.

Dumb. Useless. Lame. Whatever your skidding abilities are.

True and if he ran into, let's say for the sake of argument, some guy's pregnant wife who was walking across the street and the husband gave him a beat down (on Vimeo) the rider would probably sue for "endangering his life".

you have no idea how steep that is. note that the sidewalk has steps cut into it

the SF grand prix city-wide circuit race used to do that 14x until the pro's complained and then they cut it back to 11x.

Yeah me too. Pickup pulled right in front of me and I locked the rear up. about 1000ft later the tire blew out because I wore a hole right through it.

Besides skidding is less efficient way to stop too.

The guy looks like he has control. When I was around 18 in the 80's I rode a track bike around with no brakes too. It's not as horrible as people who do not have experience doing it think. Of course I didn't live in SF hills and didn't ride like an idiot. My track bike has a clip on front brake today ;)
