A friend has a bike with an Ultegra crank and Ultegra chain rings. It seems to be missing the peg that keeps the chain from wedging behind the crank arm (the hole is there). Is this a problem with Ultegra and is there an easy fix without buying a new chain ring?

The only time that peg comes into play is when the chain derails off the outside of the big ring. It then keeps the chain from getting wedged between the arm and the rings.

If the front derailleur is properly adjusted and the chain doesn't overshoot the big ring then not having the peg will save you about 1 gram of weight and have zero downside.

One of my bikes is missing that peg. Never missed it. I don't much care if it's on there on not.

I removed my pin (5 arm chorus rings on 4 arm record cranks) and it's never been an issue. As mentioned, just adjust the limit screw properly.
