I saw a piece of brown glass right in the middle of the trail, and after avoiding it myself, I dismounted and went back to remove it. As I flicked it with my foot, I realized it was a bigger piece than it looked. I got a stick and excavated it, revealing an entire glass bottle.
Can anyone identify it? After some searching, I figured out what it was. It says "Not to be refilled" on one side, and "No Deposit No Return" on the other. It is missing a rather, ummm, iconic label. Thats cool.
If its a Pabst bottle the hipsters will want it.
I found a similar but older bottle a few years ago, no lip for a bottle cap so it was corked. From a brewery in Richmond, Va. found in Raleigh, NC.

moose8's guess seems good
i don't know if its a regional thing, but growing up, and even still now as a 20-something I'm always finding old bottles and glass vessels everywhere in new england, just found a huge old pottery whiskey jug like 5 miles out into the woods this weekend, shame i didn't have a pack with me or i would've brought it home

I found an old bottle like that in a road cut. Mine was a Grain Belt. I think it was a "Stubby"- style of bottle they don't use much in the US. Some thorough research at the time led me to believe they were more popular in Canada:
