Those who raced against him post-war -- and admittedly were mostly in Coppi's camp -- have less kind things to say about him, but certainly his work during the war is above reproach.

I recall another quote from him, passed through his son, in another article - "Some medals are pinned to your soul, not to your jacket."

He probably would have detested my thread... But I think he deserves recognition for his achievements in the saddle and well, in the saddle during the war.
