View Full Version : Aero spokes on normal hubs?

I recently sourced all the parts for my wheel build only to find that, to my chagrin, the aero spokes are too aero.

DT 240s do not mate well with "DT Swiss bladed aero spokes" (http://www.coloradocyclist.com/product/item/DTXCZWA6).

The options now are, as I see them:

1. Jury-rig the hub to work, and if so, what's the best method.
2. Replace hubs that would work with these spokes (same measurements).
3. Replace the aero spokes for aero spokes that would work with these hubs.

Thoughts?

Thx...
Eli

You can slot the hub's spoke holes. I see it done all the time with Hoshi bladed spokes on DA/SSP/Campy track hubs with normal spoke holes. They basically cut a notch into the flanges. Seems like it may weaken them though. I'm not sure. Just what I've seen.

Rather than alter the hub permanently, I'd prolly source spokes that would work with your existing hubs, or hubs that would work with your existing hubs. It depends which component you value more. New spokes > new hubs might be cheaper though.

It is a painstaking process.

If you search hard enough you can find factory slotted hubs, but they are fairly rare.

Don't slot a DT hub. Bad idea. I've seen healthy ones break (though it is rare).

Number 3...

You 'could' slot the hubs..once upon a time, it was done all the time..I still have the guide tool for the wee drill bit but BEST solution is just use either round(like DT Comp or Rev, Sapim Race or laser) Or spend a lot of $ and get Sapim Cx-Ray or DT Aerolight..

Sapim has aero spokes that fit in regular holes, pillar has some too and if i'm not wrong wheelsmith has them too.

3 to 5 mm bladed spokes are better in straight pull hubs just because you don't have to mess with the hubs.

Depends on the hub..some straight pull hub spoke holes are as small as j bend hubs..and still need to be slotted.

Yes you are right, had type of mavic or miche type of hubs in mind where you slide the spoke from the side.

Let's see if I could convince Colorado Cyclist to trade me for some comps.

Otherwise...anyone want 30 aero spokes in 299 and 15 in 298? :D

Thanks everyone.

... unless they are the radial specific version of the DT 240s front hub, which comes pre-slotted.

Whenever I've ordered/built DT hubs they weren't slotted. Where have you seen them slotted?

It says these don't require a slotted hub? I'm no wheelbuilder here, though.

Correct. DT Aerolites and Sapim CX-Rays fit in standard hubs without slots.

My factory-built RR1850 hubs are slotted.

Don't the DT Aerolite spokes fit in regular spoke holes?

I know that Sapim CX Ray spokes fit without slotting the hubs. I have several DA7700 hubs built up with them. No problems at all. Thought the DT Aerolites were same dimensions as CXRays.

True bladed spokes will not fit a non-slottted hub.

But I guess you know that now.

Learn something new every day. Are the spokes bladed? If so are they wider blades than DT Aerolites? I assume if they slot the hubs for factory builds they use a heavier bladed spoke.

Yea, the blade is about 1.1 x 3.3 mm. (Hum...what it if I ever need replacements?)

DT still produces the "New Aero" spokes. They are used in some of the factory built wheels.

Also, Wheelfanatyk has fairly deep stock of the Wheelsmith version "ACE3 Blades"

New Aeros are nice spokes. They are the equivalent to a 2.0 unbutted spoke before the blade is forged. Makes for a very stiff wheel. The Aero Comp (1.8mm wire forged into a blade) is in between that and the CX-ray and still fits in a standard spoke hole. The Aero Comp is still butted with 2.0mm ends so standard nipples.

Oops, my bad. I double checked my DT 240s hubs, and none are slotted. I must have confused them other hub brands (like American Classic) that often do come pre-slotted.

I personally like DT Aero Comps - they make as stiff a wheel as 2.0/1.8/2,0 butted spokes, are easy to build with because they don't twist nearly as much as CX-Ray/Aerolite spokes, and are much less expensive than other aero spokes. But I'm not sure I'd call them 'bladed'. Their 2.3mm x 1.2mm cross section is more of a rounded rectangle than a narrow blade. They're more of a half-way compromise in between round and bladed spokes.
