My wife and I are taking a mini vacation 5/21-5/25 and considering Maine. We would be flying into Portland and staying in that general area. I have been to Maine 5-6 times, it would be her first and she is concerned about the weather. I told her it would be in the high 60's low 70's is that close?

Any suggestions on oceanfront/view B&B's or hotels?

Thanks,

Jeff

Inn by the sea is quite nice and is on a beach. Weather could be gorgeous or it could be crappy - New England is brutal like that. It probably will be warmish by then though.

Moose8 is right about the weather, particularly that early in the season.

We got married at Inn By The Sea and still get back there a couple of times a year. Close (15min) to downtown Portland, easy access to Freeport if you're interested, great beach, and good food onsite.

In Portland, make sure you hit Gritty's for beers and shepherd's pie, Street & Co for great seafood, Becky's Diner for breakfast, and Standard Baking Co for bread/baked stuff. Lots of new restaurants too; the Salt Exchange is hyped a lot.

If you're into art, the Colby College Museum of Art is spectacular, about 55min north of Portland.

Another vote for Inn by the Sea. We go there every summer and love it. Another restaurant suggestion or two: The Corner Room and Paciarino. And yes, weather in May in Portland can be unpredictable. Bring clothes that could span high 40s to low 70s.

There's just no way to predict the temps at this time of year. It seesaw a back and forth between 60's and 40's as the northeast weather pattern battles with the southern track. It has been a wet cold winter and spring and those trends tend to stick until bam it's summer. We've had 40's mid June recently.

Portland is awesome and you don't have to go anywhere if you don't want to. The Inn by the Sea is where my family surprised me for a 50th birthday weekend. Great spot. We vacation on Ogunquit which is about 45 minutes south. If you want to stay at a place right on one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere, check out the Norseman. Nothing fancy but right on the beach. If the weather is crappy there are always people and the ocean to watch. Everything won't be open at this time of year but the crowds won't be around either. Just a thought.

There's also a nice bed and breakfast in downtown portland where Bruce Springsteen and many other famous musicians stay when they're in Portland (there's a studio that does virtually all the mastering for big acts - growing up, a friend met nirvana in a record store when they were there). I can't for the life of me remember the name but it will come to me.

In Portland, make sure you hit Novare Res Bier Cafe

http://novareresbiercafe.com/

Once there, you may never want to leave Portland... ;-)

And yes, the weather will be a crap shoot. But then again, the weather on the Maine coast is always a crap shoot.

Thanks,

I suggest staying in Freeport or Brunswick, which will put you closer to a lot more attractions, such as the maritime museum, the aquarium, quaint towns to visit. You could get in a day trip to Acadia, although traffic along the coast will be nightmarish since it's Memorial Day weekend. I suggest having some warm clothes for the evening.

Jeff, check out the Pomegranate Inn. It's less expensive, very centrally located in Portland, and very cool. We've stayed there a few times, and when we lived in Portland we often put guests up there. Universally positive feedback.
