A buddy of mine at work is buying a used Z4 as a "toy" car, sort of like my GTV.

I'd take that 2002 (or my '73 GTV) over the Z4 any day.
(but that's just me)

Cool car, very whiz-bang and all of that. And most certainly great to own, to be seen in and to impress the opposite sex, or the same sex, with. But to drive, to enjoy at .9 lateral G or whatever it pulls, there is no place to do this without risking pulling a Paul Walker. Then again, if an oligarch wished to indulge, he'd have a private race track build, it's only money.

Always more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

My current cars are an '08 Audi S4 Avant and a "12 Mini Cooper S hatchback with a 6sp manual tranny. A lot of these modern, high tech cars are so awesome, but I still like the driver involvement of older cars. My Mini filled that desire. The driver position and pedals are perfect for " heel- toe downshifts". I am sure I could have better and consistent lap times with these new autos, but, I just love the challenge of mastering manual transmissions.
I can remember the short throws of that Tii, but it had weenie synchros. I had to double clutch to downshift into second. It worked.
Sorry, I am an old fart and I just like to drive cars that communicate. The 2002 tii was one of those cars and the modern Mini is also one of those cars.

Yeah, that's a great car. I have owned a ton of BMW's. Nowadays, I am kind of an Audi guy. My wife's car is an 2008 S4 Avant Auto. It's our second S4. The first was a sedan and my wife says the the wagon is a dud compared to the sedan. Oh well. All I know, when you put the auto tran in "S", it will scare the hell out anyone sitting in the car. And the exhaust sound is priceless. Even her friends that are not car nuts comment.

Ditto on the 2002. Had a Malaga one in the early 80's, a '73. Awesome car to drive but terrible ventilation. And the rust...Oy!

We've owned manual transmission cars for 45+ years, but this was also the only car I've ever owned that needed TWO clutch replacements in relatively few miles. And a new tailshaft as well.

That's a great fun car. I had a '74 non-injection. Just the ticket to drift the rear end through corners. It was also the only car I've had where it was possible to change the oil without getting underneath the car. The drain pan could be opened by stretching through the top of the engine bay! Too bad mine rusted to crap.

They aren't all that expensive now. You can get a pretty good one for less than $20K.

I got me one of those (but it's a 2003 -same color though). What I want is another 73 or 74 V6 Capri. I used to run circles around 2002tii's with my '74 when I was a kid. Wish I'd never sold it!

IMO they have two main things going for them:

1) Affordability: ~$5k-7k for a perfectly serviceable (but cosmetically-challenged) daily driver.

2) Dumpy- chic looks that are way deceiving, given their actual driving performance.

Cars like that (insanely expensive but pseudo green nevertheless) make zero sense at all from an environmental perspective and prove that that type of purchase is merely a fashion statement for the hyper-rich.

^^^^^ This.
I spent a couple years working on BMW's last big flop - the X6 Hybrid (http://blogs.cars.com/kickingtires/2011/09/2011-bmw-activehybrid-x6-to-be-discontinued.html). We used to joke that they wasted more fuel jetting back and forth to the motherland for meetings than would ever be saved by the few misguided folks that bought one. Sadly I think it was true, I have never seen one on the road. As an engineer, it was fun working on something that complex, but for my own use give me something simple.

I had one of these back in the day. They classified as a Heavy Duty truck to get around emissions and dump all the smog equipment. 360 Hi-Po police motor with the Direct Connection Purple racing cam and lifters, headers etc... It was fun driving a pick-up that would smoke vettes and just about everything else on the road. Real oak planking in the bed floor, sides, and tailgate. Wish I had kept it because they are worth some bucks today.

I've still got 2 of them. A '69 set up like a Ti with dual side drafts and a '74 Tii.

I've had the '69 since about 1977 and drive it all the time. It really rocks and back in the day when I had it tuned for max power there were no V6 Capris in town that could touch it. Especially on the slalom track.

I bought the '74 Tii as a restoration project. One of my colleagues had done a great job doing the mechanical restoration and just before taking it to the paint shop got hit by a Volvo and his insurance company totaled it out for a minor hit on the left fender. At that point his wife said enoughs enough and told him to sell it. I bought it and replaced the strut & fender and had it all aligned and it drove great so off to the paint shop. Now it just sits in the garage all nice & pretty with nowhere to go. I just don't love that one the way I love the '69 so it's gotta go.

Don...You interested? ;)

PS - Sorry in advance for the crummy cell phone pics....

You didn't really think all of this hybrid/electric business was for the environment did you? hahaha I'm sorry if you did, it's all about fashion...being in the IN crowd...the super hip save-the-world crowd. The do-gooders took the bait hook line and sinker and if you don't own a Prius you might as well be wearing last year's Rapha.

What is the point of a M3, Porsche etc, you can't leave 2nd gear with
out getting a sheaf of tickets, 10/10s is only available in Montana or a track.

Max out the grin o' meter in city traffic with this instead.....
You can be a 10th 10s, enjoying trailing throttle over steer and
not exceed 45mph.

Good question. That's where I'm at now.... the 20-something me despises this, but the middle-aged me just doesn't care and wants a car that will carry skis and bikes. Still, there is a a Swedish ski stud named Jon Olsson who has a lot of super cars, and he puts Thule boxes on most of them:

I've lusted after the 02 since I was about five years old, but if we're talking oligarch territory, the 507 definitely fits the bill--to my eye, one of the most beautiful cars ever made. They only made 252 of them.
