As the title says... considering building up a wheelset, want clinchers and alloy brake surface.

Would like rim depth somewhere around 35mm.

And not super porky.

Is this a pipe dream?

You really didn't give enough info on you, your riding style, and how you plan to use. But I will start with an obvious recommendation anyway.

Shimano C35?

Sorry.

I ride road, pretty light on my equiptment. 70kg max but usually 66-69kg.

Plan to use as an almost all weather training wheel.

C35's are an obvious option but wondering if anything else is around that could make for an interesting wheel build.

AC 420? Braking surface is kind of narrow...

Good call.

The AC high flang hubs might be fun too (I know nothing about them)

Poor hubs, IMHO...Campagnolo Bullet series, shimano series, best hubs. Zipp has some wheels but poor hubs, IMHO, when compared to Campagnolo or shimano.

How does the Sirrocco 35 compare to the other Campagnolo wheels? The hub's outer sheel looks a lot like the Bullet and Bora 1.

The scirocco 35 or fulcrum Quattro may be the easy solution then. Not real light, but respectable

Kinlin XR-380 or XR-300 built on high quality hubs. I have an XR-300 wheelset built with 24 spokes on Dura Ace hubs. They are 100% reliable under my 175 lbs.

Boyd Altamont is only 30mm deep, but othewise looks like a nice option for an everyday wheelset.

Kinlin XR-300 are a good option. XR-380 too heavy IMO. Or, if you have the means, the Shimano Dura Ace 9000 C35's are a nice option (alloy rim and brake surface, with carbon fairing).

Love my 7900 C35's. Not porky and very fast hubs. Hard to find an extruded aluminum rim in that depth that won't be heavy. For general riding purposes on a standard rim, I'd probably go with an Archetype.

Bomber wheels. Aero, strong and can take abuse. LOTS of riders use them here in Eugene. Of course they are built here.

The Quattros are on sale at Wiggle now for a great price.

How about the RR1.2? Not sure what you consider super porky? I think they're around 30mm.

Staying under 1500 G and around $1000, this is how I would go for store bought medium depth wheels. Could do hand built/custom maybe a little less. Doubt if I ride strong enough to warrant fancy wheels. Too many other aero areas to work on....position on bike, etc, before I would invest in wheels. Can have built locally, all I need, for about $500. Probably 25-30 MM depth and around 1500-1600 G. Also like the Velocity Comp (fairly cheap) for "otta box wheels". But I'm a Campy wheel fan. Got a local person who can repair if necessary.

I love the exclusivity of getting some sweet hand-builts like anyone else, but honestly, with the parameters you spelled out at the OP you'd be hard pressed to get anyone to build you something better than either a C24 or C35 from shimano right now. Campy offerings like neutron or shamal would be similarly good choices. The loose ball bearing hubs in the shimano wheels feel noticably better to me than any aftermarket bling hubs with cartridge bearings IMO.

The 1.2 was renamed the 585 as in 585g. They are not light, but I like my pair.

This is kinda where I'm at.

C35's tick a lot of the boxes (and hub spacing presumably the same as the C24's I already have, which means less-fuss wheel changes) but I was kinda wanting to do a custom-build 'just because'.

And the idea of some pink hubs get me excited. Hahaha.
