Other than Velocity Deep V's, what other 36H options are out there these days?

To be paired up to these DA hubs...

Planning on running 28 - 35c on them.

I'm 230 before I gear up and build all my wheels 32 3x, whether it's a mtb or road contraption.

H Plus Son Archetypes have been great under me. Anything DT Swiss is going to be great.

Other option is WTB Dual Duty XC's. I purchased 2 when BlueSkyCycling.com had a 'buy one get one free' deal on them. 25mm wide at brake tracks. Eyeletted. Phenomenal wheels for taking abuse and insanely inexpensive.

Lastly. Just buy some new 105 hubs. If you blow up a freehub body, you'll have a hell of a time finding a spare for those DA hubs.

Personal opinion: Major Toms. Running big, cushy tubulars on gravel/off-road is mo bettah than pinch flats w/ clinchers

...but that's me.

For fatter tires the mavic a719 is completely indestructible in my experience. It's also pretty heavy. I run 25s on mine sometimes for brevets and it's worked out well.

I've three sets of 36H Mavic CXP-33 with DuraAce / CK hubs. Zero issues. 220# here.

Hey William,
H+Son Archetype for sure. I have several big guys on them, both 32 and 36 hole, and they hold up very well even under 250lbs.

It's pretty much a wash going 36h with light spokes v 32 with slightly heavier spokes, and the extra spokes mean both more strength and better rideability should you ever break a spoke. But you knew that!

Cheers,
JC

The other good option is the Velocity Dyad. Underrated rim IMO. 24mm wide, very close in weight to the 'hot' wide rims.

velocity dyads are 24mm wide and have a semi aero profile for strength

I have 36 hole sets with H Plus Son Archetypes, TB-14 and Velocity Synergies. Both H Plus wheelsets are awesome with the TB-14 yielding a slightly smoother ride due to their shape, but although only slightly lighter, the Archetypes are my favorites. The Velocity Synergies are my off road, heavy abuse wheels. I'd avoid Velocity A23s simply because the Archetypes are better made and stronger in my experience. I had a very poor experience with A23s, specifically a very early US produced OC of atrocious quality. Pretty much burned me on Velocity.

To echo John, the Dyads are great. Wide, affordable and strong. Available up to 48 hole. Have a set on the gravel bike 36F/40R and sold a few sets through the shop and all have had great reviews.

Another vote for Dyads. They work well on my tandem and we are a 350 lb. team.

I have two sets of wheels for my touring bike, 40 hole Dyads and 36 hole CXP33s. For weight on the bike, or pulling a trailer, I like the Dyads. But for just riding around or light loads, I like the way the CXP33s ride better.

Both will hold up you and your kilt, but I think the CXP33s are nicer wheels. However, I only ride 28s of the CXP33s. When I have 32-37s on, they go on the Dyads.

The nicest rims of the lot are the DT TK 540. Very strong rim and best finish of all them.

Those DA hubs deserve the best.

Thank you for all the suggestions! They'll see a lot of road use, but I also like to explore the ancient NE wagon roads around here as well so "tough" needs to be built in.

TK 540's are fabulous rims as Ergott mentioned. The TB14 is also swell if you desire a more classic aesthetic.

I've got 36H Velocity Dyads laced to Ultegra hubs on my touring bike, and they have been bulletproof. Reasonably light weight and inexpensive for such a strong rim. Available in silver, black and reflective surface for a wide range of spoke counts.

Either, Synergy is the one I couldn't remember, A23 also a player.

How did you and your builder decide on 4x? Reasons? Last time I had 4x was my '95 Road Logic. Most builder's these days will discourage that pattern. Yea you have to remove two spokes at a time, not as stiff as 3x yada yada, but looks great visually. And with CXray ....

I agree. Depending on flange diameter, 4 cross on a 36 gives a LOT of flange overlap and does nothing, IMHO, to enhance wheel strength. Plus $3+ spokes, kinda don't get when compared to a 'standard' 36/3cross, DT comp or Sapim Race.

40h 4 cross maybe but again, depends on flange diameter.

Disc brake only isn't it?

I think so, I have a set on my MTB. Nice rims.

I've had good experience with durability of Mavic A319 and A719. Although the last 719 I built up has a wide spot in it, so I get brake pulsing. I have a Dyad too, which has been trouble free.

I just built up a pair of WTB DX23 rims that I found online for $20 for the pair with an old set of 105 hubs I had, that are now a decent set, if overbuilt for my weight, 23mm wheels for CX tires and rough roads. I think they're intended as 29er rims with a machined brake track. They built up round with no issues, super cheap and nice to have for occasional use. 32 hole but bombproof. Not exactly bling, but did I mention cheap? Especially if you have some old hubs lying around to build some backup wheels that you can abuse. http://www.blueskycycling.com/product/3828/54/WTB_DX23_29er_Rims_Buy_1_Get_1_Free.htm

I've got 36H CXP 33 with Ultegra hubs on my commuter. Maybe a little overkill for everyday riding but on occasion I haul some rather heavy cargo.

After I have the hubs Exorcised I'll need to choose.;)

+1. They are, or were recently, available with a reflective surface finish, which works quite well. Good choice for commuting IMO.

I put my vote on Velocity Chukker (36h) & Fusion (32h). Been well north of 200 lbs. they have held out well, no broken spokes.
