another one bites the dust -
on the heels of the passing of quill stems, csi's,
the 8-track, civility, and anything else you might
miss because you never appreciated it when you
actually had it, comes this:

don't blaspheme me if you have to register to
read. it's a harmless, small price to pay if you
don't have access to verlyn klinkenborg's op-ed
piece in today's paper, aka the new york times.

They pretty much have been into financial services and money transfer over the last few years. With the internet and inexpensive phone service the telegram has pretty much gone the way of wooden ships. (hear that SMILEY) :fight:

if verlyn klinkenborg can write so eloquently
about it as he does on so many other subjects,
it will be worth seeing its demise atmo.

All praise to you for mentioning Verlyn Klinkenborg. He'll be in town (Iowa City) to give a reading on March 9th. I'm inviting you to attend. Can you make it?

Had this short bit about the telegram I thought was quite funny:

(Dictating telegram)
Hawkeye: Dear Dad, I am not dead Stop
Hope you are the same Stop
Thinking of selling my golf clubs? Stop
Spending my insurance money? Stop

A perfectly cumbersome and expensive means of communicating very little has been abandoned by a heartless and crass society a mere fifteen years after any of us last noticed that it was still available, should we choose to use it, which we did not.

Oh, the humanity.
