Real Name: Jim

Where do I live: Now in Leesburg, VA. Previously in Switzerland. Want to go back. Lost my job there and came here......

Age: 37

Occupation: Airline Pilot

Explanation of handle: Name of the first airliner I flew. Saabs used to make commercial aircraft in addition to cars. The Saab 2000 is NOT a Saab 340 in the same way a Serotta Huffy is not a Murray is NOT a Murray.
Favorite bike: All of them have qualities. My Grandis is high on the list for its good handling.

Fastest speed on a bike: About 40 mph on the flats in some kermesse in Belgium. Was on Eddy Plankaert's wheel at the time. Downhill does not count, but did about 50+ in Switzerland. Raw speed is not what makes a good descender. Handling is it.

What is in my stable: Grandis, Strong, Anvil, Croll (3x), ITCA (obscure Swiss bike), Surly Cross Check.

How many mile last year? No Idea, but I estimate about 5000.

More later..... the battery on this computer will die any minute

is it all right if i continue to silently read your name to myself pronounced as "deeburk"? i added the vowels myself, as i have a habit of doing that when i see only consonants, but if it must be 'dee bee arr kay' , then so be it; i can live with that, and i will attempt to adapt to this ever-changing-sea-of-flux that we call a world.

biggest lie ever told:
rode my bike frequently from muncie to dayton while in college. one time got pulled over by the police for riding on the interstate near the ohio indiana state line. several weeks later rode to traffic court in dayton. I told the judge[acting as my own lawyer] the map shows you have to ride on the interstate in that area. it's the only way. Judge says you are right and suspends fine and court costs. The lie? I know other ways to avoid the interstate I just wanted to get there quicker and so road on the interstate shoulder for a couple of miles.

Well, as my first post on this forum, here goes...

Name: Ed - can't remember anything longer than two letters.
Where I live: Arlington MA (just outside of Boston)
explanation of my handle: I do a bit of custom work in titanium...
explanation of my avatar: Ain't got one - I'm saving up, maybe next year.
Age: 40 - that's 280 in dog years.
Mental age: 4.
occupation: Bike bum (explains why I can't afford an avatar)
favorite bike: I keep returning to my Peter Mooney custom race bike - it's kinda heavy and it's 16 years old now. Some day I'll find something I like as much.
What's in my stable: A small fleet of Peter Mooneys, a broken Seven, a Surley steam roller, a Ritchey Skyliner tandem, an old Fat Chance mountian bike, a new IF mountain bike, and about 25 other bikes that I raced on and just can't bring myself to sell.
Fastest speed on a bike: That would be cheating, I have a 58T chainring on the tandem. I stopped looking down at 70 going down Kinsman notch in NH.
How many miles on the road: Probably about 8,000.
Picture of myself on a ride. I'm way too ugly to be photographed.
Make up an answer to at least one additional question: 42.
The biggest lie I've ever told: Lines 6 thru 21 on last year's tax returns.
And something fun: Full moon rides, we ride out to the top of some hill, build a small fire and make smores. Most people come just to watch me lug a trailer with all the supplies (including the big bag of matchlight charcoal) up the biggest hill we can find on my fixed gear.

Ah Jason,
It all depends on the situation. Mostly you're right.
And there are a lot of different sorts of lawyers posting to this thread...who knew!

We'll remember this Keith, next year at the TDFL you'll have to fess up!

Right before whoever is giving whatever presentation starts off we'll bring you up front and center and ask the question:
"Ok Keith...how DID the fire get started?"

Well, I love geography- visiting places, getting a sense of the landscape, people, etc. Bikes are the best way to see a place- fast enough to cover alot of territory, but not so fast as to miss the details. Also, the bikes themselves, their aesthetics, and the subtle differences between them.

Stable holds: Bridgestone MB3, Marin Rift Zone, "Stelvio" w/Nuove Record, Rivendell Allrounder, Rambouillet, Romulus, Waterford RS11, Csi, Legend.
Lie: Honest Officer, I thought I knew the lady. About 2,000 miles on the road 2004. Favorite bike is usually the one I'm on--I like this whole stable and there's one for every mood.
Here's a picture of the one I love with the ones she loves.

I'm gonna have to say Beatles, Stones, CCR. Jeff N.
No, no, no! Please remember, all my esthetic judgements are correct! ;)

More seriously, if you've got any interest in understanding why VU were so great, just buy the box set "Peel Slowly and See". Their four stunning, groundbreaking albums, surrounded by enough rarities and live tracks to make the picture complete.

I'll go home and put on "Cosmo's Factory"...

Real name -- Rich or "Mac", if you go for the nickname
Where do you live --- Kailua, on the island of Oahu, Hawaii
Explanation of your handle -- last name starts with Mc
Age -- 53, but no one believes that when I sign up for the Golden Masters division
Occupation -- manage an independent Mercedes repair shop
Favorite bike -- Seven Ti Axiom, but I lust after many others (Parlee, Serotta, Colnago)
What's in your stable -- 2004 Ti Axiom, 2003 Douglas Fusion -- working toward a Serotta CDA
Fastest speed on a road bike -- 48 mph downhill from Makapuu Point with a 25 mph crosswind -- I was so busy with the gusts and traffic that I had to look afterward at the top speed registered.
How many miles on the road? -- I'll hit just about 4,000 this year.
Make up and answer at least one additional question --- Does it take lots of guts to fly hang gliders? No, it just takes a lot of faith in yourself.
The biggest lie you've ever told -- "I'm not crazy, just dumb"
Something fun -- besides having a few brews with the buds after a good ride, it could be cross country windsurfing from Koko Head Portlock to Diamond Head with the gang, hanging out in the pack together in the deep ocean swells on a rest break, watching the flying fish and the Island go by. That and a couple of memorable cross country hang gliding flights.

* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 53+ on Davidison Tandem on Whidby Island with wife wailing away the whole time, 1990??
* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? Not sure, but I commute 35 miles roundtrip 3-4 days a week and ride lots on weekends.
* picture of yourself or your ride? I don't have any around at the moment, but I did get my picture in Bicycle Guide when I won a Torelli back in '92. I was in a foot of snow with my Bstone MB-1. One of the ones I regret selling.
* make up and answer at least one additional question. My first "real" bike was a Falcon San Remo purchased back in '70 for the unbelievable price of $210.
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told: I stuck with my Powertap's report that I averaged 310 watts for 90 minutes climbing up to Paradise.

* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? @1000 on the road...many predawn hours on the trainer...8 so far this week (it's Thurs.)
* picture of yourself or your ride?
* What has Serotta done for you lately: I hung up the racing jersey when I got married. 8 years past and I started digging my grave with my teeth. When I was fit for my bike, I had a size 40 waist. I went into the store the other day, and bought size 34 pants. I have stopped snoring like a bear, can see veins in my arms that I haven't seen for years, and have conquered my issue with mind over mattress. Though I am only about halfway to where I was before the downhill slide, I feel much better about all aspects of my life. None of this would have been possible without my Serotta.
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told. I blamed a bent fender on my sister. A lie that I am going to have to take to my grave...regretably.
* and, something fun: My wife and I love taking pictures, but we are terrible at having them developed. The other day, I took 58 rolls of film to have developed and put on disks. I have spent the last two days reminiscing great times that have faded from memory.

Name: Chris. The Crazy part came from scout camp near Copake, NY way back in the last century.

Avatar: Don't anymore since I quit smoking. Actually, I consider my computer skills to be a joke.

Reside: In Outer Durango, CO, for the last 34 years, long before it received the Bicycle Friendly City designation.

Age: 71. I had a heart "episode" in 1997 with angioplasty and stents installed. As a vegetarian who exercised and hadn't smoked in years I received no lectures on changing life style.

Occupation: Retired technical publications writer for the Federal Government. Before that, a graduate student and former college instructor who tired of Freshman English and tiresome colleagues.

Bicycles: A 1991 Merckx Team Forum, now painted Molteni orange. A Bridgestone MBZip converted to a road bike because I continued crashing on the mountain bike version. A 2000 Serotta Hors Categorie, my primary bike because I don't want to wear out the Merckx.

Favorite Rides: Anywhere from my house. What goes up must come down. What goes down must come up.

Fastest Ride: Down Hesperus Hill west of Durango with a tailwind--55 mph. Could have been faster, but I was afraid to look.

Mileage: Last year, 5800. A few years ago I had over 8000 miles 3 years' running. Became too much of a chore.

Cross Training: I keep meaning to take up running/race (?) walking, but don't seem to care. Used to run and even ran seven marathons, including Boston in 1974, but too many people I know have had replacement surgery, so....

I do enjoy the forum. Please keep informing me.

Rich, I, too, was at the Alfa Romeo Nationals at Limerock with my son! Came in from Illinois to attend the fun. My son learned to love Alfas from his dad and raced vintage Alfas in Illinois and Michigan. Cars included a '74 GTV coupe, a '68 Auto Delta tuned spyder, an '82 GTV 6 cyl. coupe. He continues to race in Illinois to this day and still owns a '72 GTV "track only' coupe as well as a Rover powered Lotus.

Your note really brought back fond memories.

Short rides mostly (20 to 30 miles) but lots of great places. I put most of it down in a very not-overread blog here:
http://bikecurious.blogspot.com/

I love this forum, terrific (and in my experience, especially honest) people, it's my favorite place (the classifieds that is) to find great deals on all manner of used bikes and whatnot! I built up a wonderful Serotta custom 66cm Colorado for my stepdad early this year and even though I barely fit on it (at a mere 6'2"), it was one of the most incredible rides I've ever felt. Like a Cadillac you could race on! My next bike is definitely a Serotta!

* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? 56mph on a tandem with 575lbs of rider weight on a 1" fork, pulling an 6 month old baby in a Chariot attached. The horrible hills around Dodgeville, WI were not a good time to find out that the Arai drag brake wasn't setup correctly after we had just mounted a brand new rear wheel with a Velocity Dyad rim. Bike shop used lightweight double butted keirin racing spokes that wouldn't have supported just me (and didn't after rebuilding) and hadn't seen very many tandem drag brakes. Very, very scary. I/we had no business towing our little guy. Someone was looking out for us that day as the wheel collapsed on one of the seemingly vertical climbs.
* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? Do I get to double my mileage because I weigh twice as much as everyone else?
* picture of yourself or your ride? Like below, only a lot taller
* make up and answer at least one additional question. Is it true that you have managed to squeeze yourself into a set of Mercatone Uno team bibs?...Well, yes. Pantani was my favorite cyclist and I always wanted to be like him (as much as a 6'7" 375lb man can be). You'd be suprised how much lycra will stretch. To the point of almost being see through. Really I shouldn't wear 'em. Had to add a lot of lycra to the shoulder straps to make 'em long enough.
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told I love you. The one lie that should never be spoken.
* and, something fun. I just picked up a Mavic 870 triple front derailleur. Woo-Hoo 'tout Mavic' bike here we come!

* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? no idea. couple thousand. and maybe a thousand on the commuter. maybe...
* picture of yourself or your ride? hm.
* make up and answer at least one additional question: why are so many people on this forum older, in well-established careers, and a foot taller than i am? it's because fancy bikes taste better when you can afford them, and are more necessary when you're so tall.
* what is the biggest lie you've ever told: don't know.
* and, something fun: when i was growing up, i remember the fading american dream of being 16 and getting a license and building a junker car or motorcycle in the garage with one's dad, then going for a drive in/on it as the ultimate expression of freedom and stepping into adulthood. from the time that i can remember building things up, they were bikes, they were with my dad, and all good things in my life seem to be connected to the two-wheel culture in some way. this is a great place to be. and i am grateful.

* explanation of your handle - Combines two of my interests - cycling and golf (duffer is an apt description of my golfing prowess).
* explanation of your avatar - Haven't posted one yet.
* age (general or specific) - 49
* occupation - Credit risk management on Wall St
* favorite bike - Serotta Ottrott (bought here on the forum) and Richard Sachs 25th Anniversary (built for me). The Ottrott may be the most comfortable bike I've every owned - it really absorbs the bad roads. The Sachs is a lifetime purchase (like a Philippe Patek watch) - a terrific ride. Both are almost the same in specs.
* what's in your stable? - Serotta Concours cyclocross, Kish titanium tourer/cross, Specialized Langster, Seven Axiom ti, and just this week, Serotta Fierte full carbon. I should also mention that my wife has Rivendell Road (custom Waterford built for her) and Lynskey Cooper CX.
* fastest speed on a road bike? where? when? - 52 mph in Harriman State Park in 1998.
* how many miles ON THE ROAD on a road bike last year? - 50. I've been off the bike for 10 years whilst golfing. My golf game went to heck as work went to hell (credit crisis - the perfect storm in finance). Got back into cycling instead of being frustrated with my golf play. It's been tough getting back into good form again - I really suffered in the hills, which I used to ride on a fixed gear a decade ago. And I found a group of guys my age that are getting into riding. So, cycling is fun again.
*Other forumites that you've ridden with or met: roydyates, liberace, dhallerman, junkyardbike, angryscientist (sort of, he came to my house to buy some bike stuff); and two forumites who I never met but have corresponded over the years from the original iBob and Compuserve boards: dbrk and LouDeeter.

I am in charge of recreational activities for the city (softball, flag football and a lot more)

Favorite Bike: Well right now it is my 1980s Peugeot. I am in the process of making it my dream fixie.

What's in your stable: 1985 or 1986 Peugeot. Trek 2200, Trek Fuel 80 (and a fun little bike that I recently fitted with 2 stroke motor kit)

Fastest speed on a road bike: Honestly don't really know I just got a computer for my 2200. My guess would be somewhere around 40.

I have put in a few hundred miles over the past few months. Relatively new to riding more that just my daily commute.

Iceman
01-06-2011, 07:33 PM
*real name - Tom

*where do you live?- Anchorage, Alaska

*explanation of your handle- Alaska, winter...I am the Iceman

*age- 50(older bull who refuses to give up and no I never stopped riding once I learned how. first good road bike bought May 78.)

*occupation- builder

*favorite bike- currently a Merlin extralight, but the new Ottrott frame in the garage waiting to be built up will be shooting for the title.

*what's in your stable?-Well, (deep breath) Merlin, Look, Bianchi, Novara, Klein, Turner, Clark Kent, KHS-tandem, her Fierte and oh ya, that Ottrott

*fastest speed on a bike- 60mph drafting a semi 53x11 spun out all the way (driver was cool and let me jump on and towed me up to speed, his speedo not mine)
56mph non-drafting coming down Thompson pass into Valdez, AK during the Fireweed 400. I did the 200 that year. (check fireweed website for best race/ride in AK) Everytime you come off a mountainside your going to touch 50.

*how many miles on the road last year-6,000 plus (remember, Alaska. short summer, crappy pavement and really hostile drivers, conservatives-go figure). Never trust someone over 30? Wrong-don't trust anyone with a steering wheel in their hands. You can never ride too much.

*biggest lie- But I really really neeed it.....! (see: Ottrott in garage. Ha! who says crime don't pay).

*something funny- I have seen a crash due to a horse pile (it was a mtn bike, it's ok to laugh), oh oh and the time a buddy of mine threw his bike off a cliff and then had to climb down to get it while ALL of us laughed at him, Or was it the look on the insurance co. guys face when he got the bill for my bike that his client wrecked, Or when the trash talker who was going to put it too us 'Old guys' and had it handed to him by my buddies wife (pencil leg big mouth) or watching the cops haul away the drunk driver and his truck (while we rode by and pointed and laughed) Or the time the cop was going to give me a ticket because I didn't have reflectors, my cousin distracts him from a side road long enough for me to jump to a close by bike trail and get away (after a prolonged chase, think Jackie Gleason in Smokey and the Bandit) I could go on and on.

*something interesting- I swear the Fierte and Ottrott are shell shocked. I get this vibe from them like " what did we do to in up in this hell" Hell? No it's just Alaska.

The Iceman speaketh

Hey there, folks,

My name is Scott Stamper, and I l hail from Brooklyn, NY, although I'm from Sag Harbor and have lived all over the US in the interim. One of my friends, whose bike i seemed constantly to be fixing, called me the bike whisperer in jest once, so i kept it.

Dunno what an avatar is, so i can't answer that one...

I work as a legal services / legal aid lawyer in NYC. I'm 37 y.o. As soon as i can pay those student loans off, i want to be a 'recovering attorney,' doing something else.

I ride an '87 Pinarello with DuraAce and bontrager racexxxlites. what a ride. One day, i'd like a Serrotta. But, you know, the legal aid job prohibits that right now. My other ride is a '73 Atala fixed gear conversion with DuraAce hubs, velocity rims, campy bits and pieces....

I love riding my bikes. everywhere, and in all weather except the rain. hate rain. my office lets me bring the bicis in, so life is good... I rode several thousand miles last year. No racing, unless you count alley cats. which i'm definitely getting too old for...

cycling competes in my life with 1) rock climbing, 2) my nine-year-old (for whom i built up an old Terry, on which he's giving me a run for my money), 3) telemark skiing, and 4) laziness.

good grief. i'm making myself yawn.

Best, Scott

I'm dave, I'm a framebuilder. Actually started before Ben, here.
Still ride a fair amount for my 60 years. Hit 69MPH in CO. on Molas pass near Durango. My favorite bike is going to have to be one of my own builds. My current Columbus Spirit (shaped) is a nice all rounder. No nicknames, but I'll answer to various things, if you know what I mean. I'm a Vietnam vet. I'm married for over 20 years, no kids, only Rottweilers. I'm a past shop owner .
I make my living still from bicycles and restoring and repairing 50's, 60's and 70's foreign sports cars and anything else that piques my interest.I have a blog and a gallery. Just Google Porter Custom Bikes and you'll know more about me than I can remember at any one time. Hope to meet some of you in San Diego in April.
