Have an old shimano wheel (1984!) with a six speed thread on freewheel. any guess if a single speed free cog can be used on a hub like this for a SS conversion?

No tool marks on freewheel so assume I need two chain whips to remove?

No notches or anything on the 'freewheel', it may be a cassette, not a thread on freewheel.

Pictures?

Looks like a threaded on cassette to me. Two whips is correct.

Cassette not freewheel. You can still single speed it, use spacers , the one cog you want and then the last, spin on, cog to hold it all together.

You can buy ss kits, they have a couple of cogs for choice and the spacers you'll need.

If it's 6s, then it's Uniglide, right? I doubt there were ever any SS conversion kits made for Uniglide freehub bodies, but you should be able to make it work with some spacers and one of the cogs you currently have.

Fair point, I have heard of various kits over the years but never bought one, I don 't know about compatability issues.

Correct..no 'kits' for uniglide...'single speed' conversions weren't 'invented' yet when 6s uniglide was around.
