There r no universal tell sign as far as i know. Give us a picture n we can tell you cause most will recognize what series it is.

There's usually a part number on the back side parallelogram that you can match.

I don't think it will matter. Cable pull is controlled by the shifter, not the derailleur.

But, I don't do my own wrenching. This is info I've picked up on the internet and is therefore subject to doubt.

If it is a shimano is really does not matter, they interchangeable in my experience.

The derailleur translates cable pull to lateral movement. It does manner. Anything else is an internet lie.

Sram is the same too. Campy is the same as long as the b screw is on the lower pivot.

I'm currently using a 9 speed derailleur on a 11 speed set up.

as long as it's not a shimano 10 speed MTB RD.

Yes, there is that bit :)

Kindo of funny how their cable derailleurs are interchangeable but their electronic ones are not.

so a campy 10 spd rear derailleur will work with 11spd shifters? according to this it does. http://forums.roadbikereview.com/components-wrenching/campy-10-rd-11-speed-drivetrain-160601.html man, i got to do the due dillegence before i make decision.

Not quite, they tweaked it a little. You can modify the fixing bolt and get by though.

I believe that's an RD-4500 derailleur, so technically 9 speed. It will work with either 9 or 10 speed Shimano road shifters, or 9 speed (but not 10 speed) MTB shifters (assuming you don't exceed its capacity).

I'm using an 8 speed XT rear with a 9 speed cassette without any problems, but then I'm using a downtube, friction shifter.

It will work with modification at the fixing bolt, making the path longer. 11s rear ders with older 10s ERGO works fine.

Nope as long as the rear der isn't worn out.

Any experience with Bar ends, I just got some off of ebay and the front shifter is super tough to move. The rear clicks through pretty easily, am I missing something?

Shifter or front der? Some thin spray lube into the shifter may help..got all the parts of the shifter?

Shifter itself is really tough to move. Pretty sure I got all the parts

The front is friction so it won't "click" like the rear. Not sure if you were expecting the front to click and are confused by this?

No I wasn't expecting it to click. Its just really hard to move positions. Ill try some lube, but its really hard to get from the top to bottom.
