Are these frames stainless steel, or do they have to be painted?

Looks like a mix to me, depending on the bike. He mentions they mix Reynolds, Columbus, and Dedaccai, and only two of those tube makers make stainless. It's sure pretty, but from the description it sounds like the thing would dent if you looked at it too hard.

Beautiful bikes, but a high price. Is it the importation cost that makes them so much more expensive than our premium US frame makers?

Baum have been very successful since their intro into the US. Regardless of why they are "expensive" the demand is strong and there is a waiting list. Customers clearly see value. They have painted titanium bikes with great colors and schemes and bucked the trend of polished/matte finishes.

they put a lot of work into those bikes, yes, but 10 or so years ago the Au dollar was half the price in US $ it is now...

I contacted them some months back about a frame. The conversion rate to the dollar killed the deal.

I give them a big  for offering stock geometries for tall people who are normally proportioned (none of that 65cm seat tubes with 58cm top tube silliness). Top tubes up to 63cm? Hell yes. Such stock geometries haven't been offered since Serotta.

Biggest Gunnar roadie is a 68 with a 65 top tube.

A new Savile Road website is under development. We are not a Baum dealer if that's why you mentioned it in this thread.

There is a shop in the SF area that carries Baum. I was there last September and was able to look at Baums. Without riding them, I can say that their welds were pretty tight, the paint jobs were very nice and they weren't cheap (but the same was true about the Pegs they had in the shop.

As I understand, Above Category, in Sausalito, is the only US dealer.

I'm not knocking Baum. They make gorgeous bikes. But, I am pretty certain I can buy a custom moots, firefly, indy fab, etc. for less and have it painted by Joe Bell if needed.

But, that's not my query - is there a large duty assessed on bike frames?

Yes - AC is a fantastic shop stocking beautiful merchandise.

i dunno about import duties, but i'm sure AC gets their cut and for that kinda coin you might as well fly out to Geelong and go test ride with and get fit by Darren himself and make a vaca out of it....money better spent than on a middleman IMO.

Agreed; a cycling vacation in Oz would be nice.

I have the steel Espresso and the Ristretto is classified as a pure race bike and as one reply said it is built to finest torrance so any slight touch will dent it.

Pretty sure none of the tubing is SS

I am aussie so 1AUD = 1AUD and no import for me

I don't see your Espresso listed on Baum's website. Has it been replaced by the Cortado?

Totally agree with your assessment. There are so many great Ti or steel frames made in the US to be had so there is no reason to look elsewhere. Wouldn't it be best to leave a dream painting scheme to a specialist like Joe Bell or Spectrum instead of a builder?

Wouldn't it be best to leave a dream painting scheme to a specialist like Joe Bell or Spectrum instead of a builder? This really depends, doesn't it? There are different elements to a great paint job—there's the graphic design component (design, color combinations, etc.), and then there's the quality of the painting itself. Not all great painters are great graphic designers (and not all builders are, either). There are a handful of builders that have an incredible eye (imo) for graphic design. Tyler (Firefly) is one—I can't think of a Firefly that I've seen that I didn't like, and virtually no two are alike. Two other builders that come to mind are Sacha White and Dario Pegoretti (probably more polarizing than Baum, Firefly, etc.). The newer Baum paint schemes are distinctive—you know immediately that it's a Baum—and the color combinations are typically sharp.

So part of the experience of getting a bike from one of these builders is also having the paint scheme designed by them—at least that's how I think of it. Of course, there nothing wrong with having SPW, JB, or other great painter paint one's frame, it's just a different experience.

To respond to questions about import duties, US and Oz have a free trade agreement, so duties weren't an issue for my Llewellyn a few years ago.
