I don't know if this would interest anyone, but I scanned in some photos I took back in the 80's at the Kissena Velodrome in Flushing NY. It's in a set with some newer photos, but the vintage ones are easy to pick out. Hope you will enjoy...

Looks very similar to one in the patagonia.

This one was demolished in 2012 because nobody was using it, 250 meters, like 45 degrees banks, you really needed to know what you were doing.

Raced in this one aswell... 33 degrees, 333 meters... probably soon will be gone due to a new one built copy of the one in london, that did not know till a few days ago...

noonline,
I used to race with Mike way back in the 80's with KCC. I went by the track around 4,5 years ago when visiting Queens, and there was Mike training, getting back into racing. I don't know if he is still racing today.

Made it ok through the winter. Recent cleanup by local racers left
the track looking good.

Spent most of my younger years in the park behind the track. Track looks good, compared to the time I lived nearby, when it looked like the BQE. Cool pics, thanks for sharing.

john campo posted these, and many other great cycling photos on his facebook page. he's been the keeper of the flame at kissena for many years, and took a lot of time on weekends to train me and get me, and many others into the sport.

I imagine it's been tried before but, why can't we find a donor/fundraiser to repave the kissena velo.
How much could it possibly cost for a total overhaul?

How much could it possibly cost for a total overhaul?$100-200 per linear foot is probably a close-enough estimate. So, $130,000 - $260,000.

That's actually a big chunk of change....

Kissena is on NYC Parks land so it is under their control. I am pretty sure than a Conservancy could be created to take care and improve the track condition and bring it up to National International Specs.

At the moment the track is 400 meters and I am pretty sure the accepted standard maximum is 330m (correct me if wrong).
By bringing it to current specs there is the possibility that more racing events and elite racers would come to Kissena.

Of course the following would be needed.
a) Infield warm-up area. (Space is there but never paved)
b) Lights. ( this would extend the hours of use especially in the summer)
c) Benches for riders
d) Bike racks for Bikes
e) Development program to train track racers of ALL ages

Oh yeah, there is a major drainage area under the infield that may still need to be improved.

Could this be done?
Anything can be done with the right corporate sponsors or benefactor(s).

One of the nicest tracks in he world is sponsored by Home Depot. Maybe Lowes would be interested.

Its actually not anymore... Now its the Velo Sports Center at the Stubhub Sports Complex (or something like that.) Stubhub took over as the main sponsor roughly six months ago.
