Spring has now sprung in much of the nation, and California has been leading the charge for great weather. It is another beautiful day here, probably 75 degrees or so with light winds. I got a nice 30 mile ride up to a local reservoir and back through the vineyards to home.
There was a paucity of collegiate riders out today, which makes sense since I saw numerous Cal Poly students walking downtown with green shirts on at 7 AM Saturday on my way to work. Apparently, Saint Patrick's Day is now a weekend event

I was out yesterday and today but it's 84F at the beach so it must be approaching 96F inland and that's too hot for me.

Drop dead, man. Mid teens and still a crapload of snow. And even when it warms up it will be wet, salty and crappy. Late winter sucks...

warm day on saturday here. windy though, very windy. i had to work half a day, but brought my Serotta to work and did the bear mountain ride afterwards. lots of cyclists on the road following a miserable winter here. roads are in crap shape unfortunately, and i doubt they will be mostly repaired anytime soon, but felt great to be out with just a light long sleeve jersey and knickers.

here's the bike at a stop for a ham and cheese on a croissant!

Steve,

That sounds absolutely wonderful and you're a lucky guy to enjoy such great weather. What are the big employers in the area? Any of them hiring? I'm not jealous at all.

It was a little chilly this weekend, and I haven't gotten my tires glued up yet. I spent this weekend cleaning glue off my rims, the last time I glued tires I did a messy job so I wanted to start fresh this year.

29d. Windy as heck. Office park crit. Field Sprint. 15th/52.

Note: I have officially changed my opinion of the Craft windblock baselayer. Without it, I'd have frozen to death each of the last three Sundays.

So the folks that run Fountainhead's mtn biking trail system put a lot of time, effort, and $ into a new trail.

Nossir. I don't like it. It starts with an uphill rock garden with a couple of steps in it that goes to a fairly narrow wood track, then some really sharp, steep turns. After that, it isn't too bad till you get to the random piles of rocks. Many of which have the pointy ends of the rocks sticking up.

WhoTF thought THAT was a good idea?!

To add insult to injury, they're going thru and making all the turns smooth and banked. Great for people that don't know how to mtn bike or that think that 'going fast' is all there is to mtn biking. Not so bueno for those of us looking for your typical 'east coast roots and rocks' style of riding.

You know.... stuff that takes skill, timing, and balance to ride.

I may manage to make it back every once in a while, but overall? Thumbs down.

Sonoma Co coast loop yesterday. Joy Rd>Bodega Hwy>Bay Hill>Hwy 1>Coleman Valley for those familiar. Just a perfect afternoon!

Hoping to get out for an hour or two on the 29er before the sun sets today.

Tandem ride yesterday. First ride of the year for my wife. Two and half hour ride.

Short, hard spinning ride today on the Klein. Got back to casa zap and took out the Crumpton. First ride of the year on the Crumpton.

Man, I forgot what it was like riding the Crumpton. I still really like the Klein but the Crumpton is on another level. Confirmed a handlebar swap is in order. Need more drop on the Crumpton. Shallow bars are stupid.

It's snowing now in D.C.

Went to NAHBS on Saturday when it was nice and warm and sunny. Today it has been cold, cloudy and rainy all day. :(

...I did take off work early on Friday to ride a bit, which made up for it. Nabbed a few Strava KOMs that I'd been after for a long time.

We rode to Windy Point on Mt Lemmon Saturday, clear blue skies, 55-65 degrees. It was windy towards the end of the ride; a thirteen mile slog into a 20 mph headwind was worse than the climb. The new Hampsten climbs very well and to my great delight, it descends like nobody's business.
Sunday was 46 flat miles along River Rd and the Santa Cruz bike trails. We stopped to watch the Tucson Bicycle Classic circuit race, then headed to Time Market for a beer and pizza. Not a bad way to spend a spring day.

Zap, might have seen you and the Missus on Saturday if you were on the W&OD in the afternoon. Passed a couple nice tandems. Tandem folks always seem so friendly!

50 miler yesterday, parked the GTI on Rugby Road by the Fx Cty Parkway, took the path up to Sunrise, then the MUP out to Leesburg and back again. Gorgeous. The new Century rode flawlessly and there was a paucity of poseurs.

The weather here in the PNW hasnt been brightnsunny as some parts. I did manga to get out for a good ride the other day during a trip to Portland. Krhea was real helpful in pointing out a great route for me.
I rode out to Multnomah Falls on Monday, via the Historic Columbia River Hwy. For anyone riding the Portland area, this is an awesome ride on some nice roads.
The weather was a mixed bag(clouds, wind, sun, rain, wind, and more wind).

Thanks for the photos. HCRH is a great stretch of road!

It sure is! The only issue I had, was that I started from the airport. I rode Marine View drive to get to Troutdale. On the return trip along that stretch, the wind beat the hell out of me.

My wife and I took a short ride today, from Pleasanton to the end of Cull Canyon and back. About 30 miles or so. It was about 80 degrees here today very weird for mid March. Good day not a lot of wind. No Pics, I need to remember to take a couple shots on my rides. You guys post a lot of very cool pictures.

Snowed today here, high in the 20s - possible single digits tonight.

Yesterday I rode to look at a frameset about 40 miles away, tacked on a few extra miles at the end for a 95 mile ride. Temps a few degrees either side of 40 over the duration of the ride.

Two days in a row on the tandem with my wife. Yesterday a mellow pace 42 miles from Campbell up to Palo Alto for lunch and back. Today we rode from Hillsborough up to San Francisco Ocean Beach and back. I'm always way more beat up after riding the double bike even though the stats don't indicate it.

Got in close to 50 miles yesterday then another 16 or so this morning fore recovery. Couldn't ask for a more perfect day out in Monterey Carmel area plus it was spent with some great friends.

First longer ride of the year... ouch but it felt great.

Was talking to folks at work about cycling .. how I can't believe this is a way to stay fit. Sooo much better than spending $ on a gym membership I'd only use for 2 months and then waste the rest of the year.

I took this pic to send to them.. "This is what my workout looked like.. What's yours look like" just to rib 'em.

I ditto Steve's words. We will be using towel downs for the rest of the year.

On Saturday, the temps zoomed up into the mid to high 40's! That might not sound great, but compared to what we've had this winter it was wonderful! I went for my first intentional gravel ride. A local club has a 29mi loop that I rode solo. About 3/4 of the ride is on gravel roads which run side-by-side to many of the paved roads I ride on often. It was a fun ride, but between the wind, gravel and being early in the season, my legs were cooked the last few miles when the hills popped up.

I rode my Specialized Crux Elite cross bike with Kenda Slant Six 32mm tires. I have some slightly wider 35mm tires on the way which should smooth things out a little more.

Tandem Rider
03-17-2014, 05:00 AM
No pics but got in about 3 hours Saturday on the tandem with a group. Couple of new faces and a bunch of old friends I haven't seen since the ice and snow invaded and occupied the roads. Windy day, rolling about 18-20 into the wind, that was painful for this early in the season. It was my 5th ride since mid November, the other 4 were earlier in the week. Paying the piper now.

Got out Sunday solo on the gravels, about 28-30 degrees and sunny. Spent about 2:15 riding at the point where my feet were chilly, my hands were chilly, and if I ease off I'm going to be in trouble. I prefer to ride these temps solo for that reason.

I should have ridden the trainer this winter but at this point in life, I'd rather shave with a torch.

Did our usual group ride on Saturday and it started out a bit chilly for us at 50º when I left my house. A little smaller group than normal...but as always, it was fast and challenging ride and a great workout. It's a 60 mile ride for me with about 10 miles of that riding to and from the ride.

OMG! Is that a broken chain ring?

I did not get out this past weekend but I did get out the weekend before. It was sunny 42 degrees 15 mph wind WSW. First time out this year. Two hours average mph 16.5, not bad considering that I was bundled up to keep warm. Wind block tights, Lake winter boots, and a couple of layers under the jacket. Turning into the headwind was a challenge but it was a good day. I put on temporary fenders. A few little streams of water where the snow piles were melting. The biggest thing I noticed afterward was a white dust over the bike. So much dried up salt on the shoulders causing s salt dust to kick up when riding over it. A careful wipe down was needed.

So ironic. Lots 'o folks around here are running water 24/7 to keep it from freezing. City DPW says they can probably shut them off safely around mid April.
