I think it might hit its target audience more closely than you might think. A lot of people buy "hybrid" type bikes for easy cruising on the bike path, because they like the upright seating position and the fat tires. But many of these bikes come with knobby tires which aren't well suited to pavement riding (most of these bikes rarely leave the pavement), and their flat handlebars give few hand positions. This bike might give a better pavement riding experience to the vast majority of "hybrid" bike riders who rarely go off road.

On the other hand ...

I'm really curious about any secondary front wheel retention system this bike might have. The fork appears to have vertical drop-out slots, which makes it prone to disc brake induced wheel ejection if the axle isn't firmly clamped. Many casual bike riders don't understand proper quick release skewer operation, often just screwing the lever in like it was a wing-nut. After they removing the front wheel (to put the bike in the car to drive it to the bike path) they might not adequately tighten the front axle properly when they re-install it. I hope Giant has thought this through when designing the front axle retention mechanism.

I don't like the looks of this bike but I like the idea of rack mounts and disc mounts. If the bike's contact points are there fit wise and the geometry works then I would enjoy this bike and the looks could grow on me. I don't care much for the components. Probably the worst for me personally is the mechanical disk. I am sure they work fine but I would just rather have hydraulic. I think it would be a nicer bike if it was spec'd better all the way around but then it probably would be out of it's targeted clientele.

Saw this this past Saturday on one of our first mild days (temp >30).
Older woman riding it with sweatpants with shorts pulled over them. I was surprised to see some of the features (e.g. disc brakes), but props to the rider for being more adventurous than I am...
I give more time for the salt to come off the roads and some of the puddles to dry.

I agree with Mark McM. I think this will and does really appeal to the normal hybrid rider who wants something a little sportier. In fact my old roommate from my days in London is buying one of these as his introduction to road biking in Hong Kong.

I think this is the wrong group of people to be asking this question. I doubt that this group is likely to be interested. Do I think this is a bike that might get someone off the coach and riding? Yes. Might they think it is a nice looking/fitting/riding bike? Very likely.
