View Full Version : New frameset or new wheels?

I have a bit of cash burning a hole in my pocket - maybe $1000-ish. I cannot decide between a new frameset or new wheels.

Option 1:
Wheels would be HPlusSon archtypes laced to CK hubs for the Bedford. I mainly ride Open Pro's with Ultegra hubs on that bike. They are perfectly fine. I've never been a wheel snob but I'm intrigued by a new handbuilt set to put the "icing on the cake" for the Bedford. This is likely a pure aesthetic choice.

Option 2:
Frameset would be a Black Mountain Cycles Monster Cross or equivalent. I have a full 9sp Ultegra group and a lighly used wheelset that I could build it up with. I'd only need to change the brakes to canti's and tweak a few other parts to get it running. I don't know how much use I'd get from this bike, but I've been intrigued by a gravel bike, esp. the Monster Cross, for a while.

Option 3:
Buy a 1911

Go for the gun, Tex.

In the past, I would have bought a new frame. Recently, my inclination has changed to new wheels. If not the H+Son, then a set of HED Belgiums.

My BMC Monster Cross is such a fun bike to ride! And I too have a Bedford. I vote for spending on the Monster Cross. You can always find a good set of handbuilt wheels in the classifieds here for $400 or less.

If you are anywhere near any dirt or gravel, I would choose the monster cross rig. While new wheels would look good on your Bedford, they would not make a huge change over buying some nice tires. Monster cross, on the other hand would open new worlds.
By the way, what's a 1911?

Get a new frame! Then you will end up buying more than you ever thought you would and that feeling is going to beat the wheels without competition!

Frame. The wheels you suggest aren't that different from what you have.

Could always just rebuild the Ultegra hubs with H Plus Son or HED rims if you want something "different."

A 1911 is a pistol.

Spend your money on something that improves life and not something that destroys it.

I like guns. There is nothing wrong with guns. They are inanimate objects.

Let's get back to the question, please.

I approve the N+1 approach: Get the monster cross!

I'd get the new frame. a new bike is way more fun than new wheels.

Also, a P229 would be good.

Nice! But I have that space well covered.

PS - the Monster Cross would be cheaper than the wheels!

Custom handbuilt 1911, $1,000 would make a decent deposit. :)
