What part on a bicycle do you "connect with"
or what part do you like the most. Mine would
have to be handlebar tape. Nothing quite like a
bad wrap to make a good bike stand out. I really
would like to wrap some brooks but man its hella
unvegan of me.

My Mavic Starfish crank provides a great companion with it's reflection of the sun on dark new asphalt. I love it when climbing in the mountains. It's my favorite, and I have three.

nothing else really matters.

parts is just parts...they can be swapped out,
replaced, and adjusted to accommodate the rider
and rig.

That is why you use the proper tools on them.

Well that and the frame deserves it also.

Love the way its sculpted...btw, all Dura Ace 7800 parts are pretty cool looking. Great fit and finish. Very artsy/industrial look to them all, especially the front brake.

The part of the bike I like best, besides the frame, is the crank set. Maybe it is because in the old days I became an expert of sorts dealing with the pins that held the crank to the bb spindle, taking apart the bb for lubbing, and so on. Maybe because I remember distinctly when the first Campagnolo, oh so beautiful Campagnolo, crank set with the new system without the pin came out. Maybe because the present day alloy Record crank set is so pretty. I don't know why but that's the part I like best.

Now, I hate to admit it, but the part I feel closer too is the saddle. Saddles are organic and interact directly with your body. A comfortable saddle is a good friend. In my youth, we would place our leather Brooks saddles in a pot with water and lots of butter over low heat for hours. This had the purpose of softening and presumably somewhat water proofing the leather. Also, we would hammer the hide to soften it up, and hammer the sides of the frame on the back to make the saddle narrower. Sometimes my mom would come home and find a Brooks saddle slowly simmering on her kitchen. And I'd get a whupping for using up all of her butter.

Gotta go with wheels and tires in general. Aside from the frame, nothing changes the character of a bike (both the way it rides and the way it looks) like a set of wheels. The same bike looks and feels like a totally different machine with a set of handbuilt, 36 spoke MA-2 based wheelset with Phil hubs and 32mm cross tires vs with a set of Zipps with 20mm vs a set of Ksyriums with colored 23mm Michelins vs a set of yada yada yada.

A close second would be the loops of cable housing coming out of the old non-aero brake levers and heading for the front brake and tt cable stop heading to the rear brake. Great symmetry and swoopiness. I don't have this setup on any bikes at the moment, but I will again someday. Looks too good not to have at least one classic bike with these guys and downtube shifters.

imho the frame is the coolest part of a bike, and I love mine. But when I ride I feel most connected to the stem and the bars. They're right there in front of your face and it's pretty cool to see them whizzing down the road below.

evn though the engine isn't completely up to speed.... :crap:

S-bend aerobars and the small auxiliary brake lever at the end.

The bars are smooth, elegant, and comfortable, and the lever is an idea that took way too long to develope.

If the fork don't match, onto a frame I will not latch.
