I'm new to this forum and to Serottas in general:
I just picked up this frame and fork from a local listing and was wondering if anyone had any idea of a history behind it? The listing (and the decal) suggest it is a 1997, however the serial# is 831111, which I would think would mean an 83.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Measure the tube diameters and get back to us.

Judging by the top-of-top tube routing, the above-bb routing, and the details on the frame, I think it's a 1983 repainted in 1997 if I didn't know better.

Maybe they did a run of 1983 replica frames in 1997 that I never heard of?

In any case, it looks nothing like a stock 1997 frame from Serotta looked like...

Is the "1997" sticker under or over the clear-coat?

I don't have it in hand yet, but the seller said it is under the clear coat.

Definitely not a 1997 CSi - binder is wrong - CSi was fastback, CSi has swaged tubes, CSi had curved chainstays, CSi had vertical drop outs, CSi had below-the-bb routing, CSi had HT mounted cable guides.

It's a Serotta but certainly not a CSi or a 25th bike. It was likely built in the late 80's and repainted with some modern decals.

Other than that...;)

Looks like it is a 1983 Club. Dang, a bit disappointed. Haven't exchanged yet, but I've agreed to $500 for the frame and fork.

IMHO too much. If either of the two CSi here on this thread fit, look no further:

Nice looking frame but you gotta ask yourself if it's $500 nice since it's definitely not a CSI and is likely 14 years older than a 25th anny model.

Repainted 1983 Club Special.

Did you get the fork? There was a Campagnolo 50th anniversary Club Special in 1983 that had the Campagnolo shield and "50" engraved in the fork crown. The one example I have seen has the serial number 831131. That's only 20 from yours. I've never heard much about Serotta production practices from that era, but perhaps your frame is from a batch of Campagnolo 50th Anniversary Clubs. Serotta apparently kept building them as long as they could get the Anniversay groups as it shows as available in the 1985 catalog (which bears a 1984 copyright date). The catalog also states that the serial number of the Campagnolo group was engraved in the BB shell.

Even if not a 50th model, you've got a top of the line frame.

So it's back on eBay?

Here's a complete Serotta CSI in good condition with full Campy for $1499. It's been unsold a few times and probably could be had for less.

Given it's an 83, is the spacing 126 or 130? I wonder if it was cold set when it went back in for a respray.
