I was watching the Olympics last night and watched the Dutch sweep gold, silver and bronze in speed skating. Two of the guys were twins. I read this morning that the Dutch had won 7 of the 9 medals so far in speed skating. The article described how the Dutch team practically lives on their bikes.

We I lived in Holland the strongest guy on my National Collegiate Team TT winning team was a speed skater. He only used to race to keep fit for skating and considered the national team tt cycling title "training".

I'm sure Eric Heiden would agree that cycling and speed skating make for a good transition.

One of my best and most feared exercises I use (and on my students as well) I got from watching him train and are appropriately named "Heidens". http://stratics.com/community/data/images/smilies/DevilSmiley.gif

Many of the strongest cyclists I've seen have come out of Speed skating and crew.

And it's one of the things I love about the Olympics. A little country you never hear anything about, they show up at the Olympics and absolutely kick butt in a sport. Fantastic.

As would Clara Hughes

 that's a saying in Dutch: "In which a small country can be big"
The 500 meter sweep was amazing though, the Dutch and Norwegians rule the longer distances but the 500m is almost like a sprint. Usually shorter powerful skaters are good at it like the Japanese and Koreans and the odd Russian, but finally after years of developing sprint programs the Dutch can compete in it now. 1000m is never skated in holland so I think Shani Davis will win it but I'm ready for the 5 and 10 kilometers :)
