And why? From a purely visually standpoint, does a logo matter that much to you?

as an example of a well-done, well-crafted logo, i'd point to sacha's vanilla logo. classically influenced, yet with a modern stylish twist. as are his frames. then there's the post-modern "joke" of the world vanilla. sacha's frames are anything but. a great marriage of product, philosophy and logo.

other well done logos? new? old? whatever?

I like the simpler, elegant ones:

Kirk's decals are lovely, both the design and colors.

I like Seven's headbadge.
http://www.outdoorsinc.com/News-and-Events/News/images/63246133.jpg
IF's logos strike a great balance between retro funk and hipness, especially the clear-backed, straight-edge ones. And IF puts just the right number on, in just the right places - Headtube badge, downtube name, seattube logos, small seatstay logos. And the frame name right behind the dropout on the left chainstay. Lovely!

I'm not a big fan of Serotta's logo or headbadge. Just OK. And too many stickers. (Anyone know a failsafe way to remove the decals from a Nove?)

headtube badges are mp. they may help italians sell bikes to americans...but they're still mp. (the exception that proves the rule is pegoretti's headtube badge, because he gets the joke. for a long time the american market demanded headtube badges from pinarello long after they had stopped using them in the home market....anyway. his badge is fun and funny and poking fun at the whole business the jerk supposes.)

the best bike logos are derosa's heart and colnago's club. eddy and e-richie get props for neat-o incorporation of their initials into a neat-o logo. specialized should have to pay royalties to the schutzstaffeln for theirs, serotta's looks awesome in red white and blue on a t-shirt but only pretty good on a bike, and pinarello's new flaming p thing is just awful.

the worst logo by far is the serotta forum's stupid dancing banana.

I like the Serotta script and headtube "S" and I don't think that there are too many of them on my frame. In fact I have several more on my bike than is normal. I also like the Campagnolo script. I've always liked the LOOK logo but then I've always liked Mondria's paintings. Right now my favorite logo is my own  check it out at www.fatcatbicycles.com I did the initial design and an artist made a few minor changes and I think it looks pretty good

I think a little look back in history would show you you're assumption about head badges is way off the mark. Virtually all bikes (regardless of origin of manufacturer) before the bike boom had head badges.

curt bro-
that's what the jerk is saying.....all bikes had'em before the bike boom...modern italian bikes from then on don't....any attempt to resurrect the head tube badge was solely driven by capitalist nostalgia market tendencies....imagine if pinarello and colnago and derosa and the like started importing bikes in the seventies, eighties and nineties with glass bidons because that's what americans thought bikes should have....
modern race bikes don't have headtube badges.
