View Full Version : What component has seemed to elude you the most?

There are frames that are exceptionally hard to find and when you do theres always the size factor. We all know there are frames we want but are hard to find but how about components?

Components are usually available if you are willing to pay the price but some are just super hard to find.

For me Delta brakes-I've always liked the look and wanted to try them but the price has never been right.

and also this-which I finally found today

The 1975 Campagnolo Super Record read derailleur. It was the first year for Super Record, the derailleur was the same rounded side plate shape as the Nuovo Record, but used the titanium pivot bolts and had the new pulley cage.

I've been looking for a C50 frameset in the Italian flag paint scheme (either ST01 or STIT) for several years in my size. One FINALLY popped up after about 4 years. It has the STIT scheme and is the only one that I've heard of in the U.S. or seen in pics on the internet. There are quite a few Extreme Powers with the STIT, but I haven't seen another C50.

Also, I looked for a set of early Record cranks with the raised pedal lip, a set of con dente pedals, and an early, 1st gen front Record derailleur for a Cinelli project for several years. They've all been located and I need to get the bike together soon.

I agree with Eric- best not to get caught up in old stuff.
11 speed is too different. 8-9 and 10 speed parts don't play that well.
Retro frames cost too much for a frame that will not ride as nice as a modern steel frame. Sometimes I have thoughts about a classic steel Colnago or Merckx but then I realize that my local-ish builder could build me one for not that much more than I would spend on the 20 year old frame. And the new one would ride better and be made for me.
Bars are coming out in classic versions again- and some of the newer versions work better with modern shifters.
It is just nostalgia.
Saddles might be the only thing worth hording.
I more pine for modern things that should exist but don't. Like carbon forks with taller axle to crown measurements. Or a sweet carbon fork that takes long reach brakes and fenders. Enve could easily make both of these. With the large amount of custom frame builders out there- they would sell lots of them.

Shimano 28.6 front drl. clamps.

I have generally decided to not long for old parts- the new stuff is so good anyway.

A Flying Scot

Sentimental value. As a wee lad I met this chap while living in Scotland for a summer. He had a Flying Scot and I didn't realize until years later it was one of the coolest bikes ever. His nickname became 'The Flying Scot' because he could really move on that thing. We lost touch after I returned to the USA and I heard years later he took his life.

This thread has a road theme, and I tend to do more road these days being a city slicker... but I lust over the Ibis Silk Ti.
In contrast to a lot of new bike bits, the suspension is wonderfully simple yet effective. No pivots to wear out, just the flex of the sheet ti chainstays, all giving 1.75" of travel. Oh, they come up from time to time on ebay and craigslist, but working in the community sector (on bicycle and active transportation promotion) does not afford me the monies to buy such a lusty object. But I have a wonderful Dekerf ST, so I should be happy and shut my gobberhole.
Sooooo pretty though. Liked their ti road bikes too.

P.S. Now this is a white Flite. Mine since new, its one of the few items I sold off forum with the going tariff rate attached. These Centaur SP's are imo the best Campy has made, both mechanically and aesthetically. Regret letting a sweet used one go a couple weeks ago.

Now that we're on SP's what happened to the 27.2 Fizik Cyrano, aluminum?

I have the female part.

I need the open pros for a helium wheelset I am redoing. Won't work. Sorry.

Why not helium rims? I have a set of nos helium tubular rims lying around...as well as 2 sets of Helium tubular wheel sets.

I have a bunch of these from back in the day. Pm me if interested
