Can anyone tell me what the objects are that are attached to the down tube near the BB of the 1st 2 bikes in this image?

Did these store compressed air? If so, they must have been quite heavy. How were they actuated, since no obvious switch is visible.

What do you mean, "Back then"? I still think a matching pump is pretty cool.

Re: The tubulars they're carrying on their backs

I would think that the base-tape area would get covered with sweat and body oil and you'd never get them to stick to the rims. Anyone know why that did not happen? (I assume it didn't, because if it did they would not be carry them that way.)

In the mid-fifties, a company named EDCO produced a compressed nitrogen racing pump that had a quick fit adapter and a controlled release valve. It was 10" long and 1-1/8" diameter. They were attached to the frame using a single pump clip. They were used by many pros on the continent.

How do they all have great hair like that? Seriously. They all look like they should be in the cast of "Grease".

There was also the Pennine CO2 pump introduced in the early 50s which "was often fitted near the bottom of the down tube" using a Terry's spring steel clip. "A case of fashion over sense as the pump was right in line with any mud, water or dirt thrown up by the front wheel." :)

There's a write-up, photos, and a copy of an advertisement at http://www.classiclightweights.co.uk/components/pennine-pump.html.

Hugo Koblet used to carry a comb in his pocket and clean up immediately post-race to put on a good appearance for sponsors, fans, media, etc. Amazing what not having a helmet or sunglasses to hide behind does for worrying about appearances.

I had thought maybe a first aid kit. But based on a previous post, I thought wrong.
