I have a set of sram red crank arms that take 130bcd chainrings. Does anyone make a 36 tooth cyclocross chainring for these cranks? Looking around online and it looks doubtful but want to check with the experts here before I give up.

If the answer is no then I have a set of 172.5 sram red crank arms headed over to the classified section! Bummer...

38 is the smallest ring you can fit on a 130 bad crank.
I run 46/38 on my cross bike.
The difference between 38 and 36 isn't that big. It's about the same as a one tooth difference on the cassette. So depending on the rest of your set up, getting a cassette with larger cogs might be cheaper and easier than new cranks and rings.

Is your intent to run a single or double ring? I'm assuming a double.

I've done both in the past. Single ring with a 42. Double with 46/39.

Or do you want that 36 for some gravel/rando action on tough climbs?

Running double and was hoping for a standard 36/46 cross set up. I suppose I can explore a bit larger cassette.

So if my chainrings would be a 46/38t, and I'm running dura ace 7900, what's the biggest cassette i can run?

For what it's worth, this is my cross, gravel, wandering single track bike.

Thx

according to Shimano, the 7900 rear derailleur can do up to a 28t cassette. i imagine anyone who has tried/succeeded otherwise will chime in!

I think you'd have to mix and match cassettes and spacers, but 12-30 should be possible. 12-28 is the biggest 10-speed Shimano cassette I think. (But what do I know? Campy!)

I would put a xo type 2 derailleur and then you can run up to a 36 on the back. plus you get extra chain drop protection.

12-30 no problem.

There is an ultegra 12-30 10 speed cassette. I put it on my 10 speed ultegra bike and just had to adjust the rear derailleur a bit but so far it's worked fine and makes hills easier.

The largest range cassette I've ever run is a 12x26 with a standard Ulterga derailleur. And my mtb's have always been SS. So I'm not really sure at what point you need to get hold of a Mtb long-er cage derailleur.

Bigger than a 30, IMHO..say a 11-32/34/36..need a longer cage.
It's really just to have enough chain so it's possible to go big-big w/o breaking chain or killing the RD/frame.
