i am repairing a raleigh frame, with cracked seatstay caps.

Cracked all the way through, a person put a seatpost, one size too small into the frame, and cracked the stays.

curious, which brass rods do i order 330 or 360

there is a machine shop behind our shop, but they don't have any rods on hand

thanks ahead of time

Can you put a seatpost one size too small into the person who did this, and crack them?

Guess that wouldn't fix the problem.

Before I got into bike frames, I made jewelry, so I like using silver. You can get a few feet of fine silver and flux for it on eBay. But I'm not sure you could use silver in a joint where brass had already been used.

Or maybe you could? Probably someone here can confirm--

Disclaimer: I'm not a builder...

I would think that you would want to use silver to do a repair like this. The original was built using brass. Heating it up enough to make the new brass flow could also melt the old brass and compromise the old joint. As silver melts at a much lower temp, you will not need to heat it up enough to melt the brass when doing the repair...

Good luck!

I'm just imagining that this is one of those frames with inadequate overlap between the stays and the seat tube. In which case, you aren't going to fix it with brass, and definitely not with silver. "Seat post too small" is an easy excuse for a bad frame.

I just go to Henry James or Cycle Design and get their brass, either is good stuff.

Everything is aligned and in place

Just hairline and ready for brazing

Just need a single rod

Bought some flux today and going for silver

Lower temps, so caps stay in place

Pretty clean job, I am thinking

I have silver brazing rods. It's prefluxed and is 74% silver. I used it when putting on S&S Couplers. They ask for/require 72 or better. If you want one I can send it out.

Sure thing. I tried to Pm you when it went out but you don't accept pm's. So sorry bout that. At least it arrived straight I hope? By the way, I have more. Like 4 more rods. And each rod is like 2 feet. So let me know if you need more. Also, I found some more in 80+% silver. It's like 81 or 82. Can't remember. Non prefluxed though.

Looking good. A little silver in the Raleigh logo but easily cleaned up with a Dremel or hand files. But good job!

How did the rod flow? It worked great for me when I did the s and s on someone's frame. High silver content flows better. I liked those rods.

Oh, and I personally like the blue on that Colnago.

Guy,

Thanks for the comments

The caps cannot go back to their original state. The cracks went through the lettering, so the new material is needed / I am thinking

A considerable ammount dripped down the back side and pooled at the bottom side of the caps edges.

The rods flow was impressive / where can I order more/ 4 future projects

My daughter is very excited / she will help me spray a primer coat next week

Or help me apply chrome

She is very close to my shoe size, so excited about getting another pair of sidi's

Drive train will be ultegra 10 / down tube shifters / cane creek levers / cinelli creaking quill stem / etc.

Ummm....yeah, no termites or wood beetles please. We just put on a new deck last year. I would prefer none of them around. But thanks for the thought.

As for the rods, I will look tomorrow. I can't remember who they were from. I swear it was local though. I still have the box and I have some more rods. Not sure how many though. Watching sick kids today so in the office tomorrow.

That's cool the daughter is into the process. Mine could care less. Same with the wife.

I'll let you know who the rods are from tomorrow.

Good job tho. Seriously.

Hey. Got the book and sticker. Thanks.

Here is the name of the place I got the rods

Addifix
(216) 991-6466

What I got was cad free high silver
# 559. 1/16" size. 15 ft is the minimum.

I have 9 rods left out of 10. Each rod is about 20" long

Same stuff I sent you.

This place is a wholesaler so not sure if you can get it straight from them but it's worth a try.

Let me know if you need anything or have any questions.
