View Full Version : Show Us Your Commuter

I just got done wiping down my Mercian Vincitore after a wet week of commuting, when the sun broke through the rain cloulds for a minute. I took the opportunity to snap a few quick pictures. I have a 11.8 mile ride to work each way, mainly flat along the Willamette River. I hit busy River Road during the early morning and evening rush traffic, so I really rely on my lights to be seen by cars in the gloomy darkness. I have a Light and Motion Solo MV up front backed by a Cateye LED flasher, and two Cateye flashers in the back. Show us what you rely on to get you to where you need to go.

terry, i disagree. it has a minimalist appeal, i think, kinda cool in its own way. maybe not beautiful but pretty. plus i dig the homage to the turn-of-the-century chicago cubs pitcher "three-finger" brown with your right brifter.

Naaaaah. The stem is butt-ugly, but the rest of it is just fine. Lose that and you're ready for the fashion show.

When I bought this bike a couple of years ago it was the first time I had used a triple. I realized how much happier my knees were after climbs. I then moved to compact cranks on my other 2 bikes and my knees thank me.
Kind of an ugly bike though.

Here is my Schwinn S(9five).6...from the beginning of the dot com era comes this little gem. In Deep Purple (cue Smoke on the Water)....with the Chromo-blend USA built asymetrical (could it BE any other way?!) frameset and the STX Shimano drivetrain. This baby comes with the baby seat rack and the rubber bungee for the unexpected errands and aquisitions on the go. She tracks perfectly. Brakes like a Porsche. ;)

14 miles each way--can't beat this setup (imho). Nice steel frame, comfy Ritchey carbon fork and cushy Specialized Burough tires all set up singlespeed with an Eno rear hub (running 48x17 at the moment). My "other" commuter in the background (rear wheel anyway).

OMG! I left the house with one commuter bike today and returned with TWO.

The things people throw away! This little gem was sitting waiting for the trash heap when I happened by on my trusty Schwinn today. I rode home for a quick lunch and to let my dogs outside. Yes that is a Brooks saddle :D

Daniel Rudge (1840–June 26, 1880) was a British engineer who built high-end bicycles and velocipedes. Rudge invented the adjustable ball bearing bicycle hub (British Patent No 526) in 1878.

The French racing cyclist Charles Terront, renowned for winning the first Paris-Brest-Paris event in 1891, used Rudge's axles with much success thereby bringing world attention to Rudge. In the years before John Dunlop invented the pneumatic tire, Rudge addressed the rough ride by producing a four-bladed, spring-suspended fork in 1887.

After Rudge's death, his company was merged with The Tangent & Coventry Tricycle Company to form D. Rudge & Co. which in 1894 became Rudge Whitworth Cycles. By 1911, the Rudge Whitworth Cycle Company was also manufacturing motorcycles.

After the company fell on hard times in the Great Depression, the music company EMI bought the Rudge name. EMI produced bicycles under the Rudge name from 1935 until 1943 when they sold the name to Raleigh.

Totally! I gently pulled one very old 'dymo' label with a gentleman's name on it...didn't even fight me to come off, but I am keeping the red label with this guy's name in my cycling tool kit. I appreciate him keeping it in the basement! Can't wait to get the old girl on the road. I'll post some better pics later. Those were from my camphone. I am a bit of an anglophile....I gave a USA Raleigh to my pal at the beginning of the Spring. Another find from the trash heap (yes, I confess I dumpster dive for bikes :p ) -- This ol girl is just karma...you give and sometime you get.

Whippettanker -

Is this the final production Kog Porteur? Did Matthew settle on the Kustard color? And are they shipping already? Hot diggity. I like it! And I have a spare set of wheels sitting in my garden shed that has been waiting for the dust to settle from all the new 650B bikes. If it is inexpensive and lets me use my spare parts bin, this may be my future commuter as well.

Very cool, thanks!
