View Full Version : Removing Big Stupid Ridiculous-Looking Gaudy Labels From Schwalbe Ultremos

Well, anybody ever tried it? Know a good way? I've scraped the labels off Vittorias with good results (complete removal, no damage to tire) but their labels are on the tread rubber, whereas the Schwalbes' are on the threads of the casing.

Any suggestions appreciated. I'd rather remove them than Sharpie over them, don't quite trust that. . . but I suppose I should try it, it might work.

This response originally had 5 steps but I simplified it for simplification sake.

1) ride bicycle + look forward not down.

have to ask the question -- why would you have problems trusting a Sharpie? Think the chisel tip (as above) is rip a hole?

Perhaps the chemicals in the ink could have some tbd negative effect on the sidewall.

I've used Sharpies on sidewalls to initial Pit Wheels, and I have never seen any damage to the tire. Nor do I know of any reaction that could take place. The pro's use Sharpies with no hesitation.

Back to the OT... nah, never mind..

Thanks all. I might try a Sharpie -- I'm not worried it'd poke through the sidewall or something, I'm just not sure it'd be exactly the same color. Sharpie black has this almost iridescent sheen to it in some lights.

If a Sharpie is going to poke through the tire's sidewall, you'll have no prayer with the first pebble you hit on the road.

I wouldn't recommend this. I used an Industrial Sharpie to hide a yellow band on some Michelin tires. Looked pretty bad when I was done, and it only got worse as the Sharpie wore off from riding.

Blacking out logos = trying too hard. Ride them until they wear out, then buy something else.

I had to refrain from adding my usual "charm and wit" to that reddit

I am usually giant-logo-averse, but I like the gaudy graphics of Ulteremos - I have no idea why.

I hate teh graphics on Zipp wheels, but that's another story.

The schwalbe ones I just got have identical labels 180 degrees apart on the same side of the tire. WTH?! I guess I can just mark one with a sharpie or something.

A bike is a tool, not a jewel...I'm confused as to why this thread exists. Nobody can see the logos when you're moving, and you can't either.

That being said, I find the Ultremos a little too flat prone for Oakland. So I wouldn't classify them as the best tool for my job anyway.

Obviously none of you guys have any OCD friends. I know a guy who is obsessed with much smaller details than this and you should see the lengths he goes to to get things "just so".

How to remove white paint from black surface. Sounds like a Pepe LePew cartoon.

Maybe I don't love my tires enough.

if yes, unload in my direction. I am all about doing the right thing so my brothers can lead more stress-free lives. Bothers me to think you are losing sleep over big white logos.

Why is the OP getting flamed / ridiculed?

How is this any different than wanting a sotto voce King headset or blacked out Enve decals on carbon rims or forks?

People will whine either way. If he keeps the logos on, people are going to get on their high horse about being a rolling billboard. "I'd never ride with those logos unless they paid me to advertise for them."

The beauty of the internet...

I guess I am in the minority of lining up the logo with the valve stem to make it easier to find the cause of the the flat.

might be in response to the "life or death" nature of OP's original message title.

PS Why did you buy them? ;-)

I got about 1,300 miles on the rear for my last Ultremo ZX. That's less than two months in the summer. By the time I figured out how to remove the logo, it would be time for a change.
I like the way they look on my HED Belgians.

Least helpful thread ever. Way to go forumites. I'll experiment with some solvents this week on an old tire.
