looking in my parts-bin. i have accumulated these "extras":

3 wheelsets
3 pair rims
10 threadless stems
10 quill stems
7 cranksets
5 brakesets
6 handlebars

and it's not like these parts are temporarily separated from a frame, the bikes in my quiver are built and fully kitted...these are "extras"...···?!

anyone else have this accumulation affliction? guess it's better than snorting coke!

so.... what kind of rims?

It's alright. I currently have three bikes built. Additionally I have one extra crank, brakeset, a couple front derailluers, four wheelsets, 4 or 5 saddles, about 20 tires, four stems, a seatpost or two....

Sounds like you need some derailleurs, cassettes, and chains and then you can start looking for some frames! :p

Waiting for Oliver1850 to chime in here...

The occasional moment of self-doubt is natural. This will pass in a day or so and he'll put his head down and go back to stacking and organizing his parts eventually realizing he's created more space to put more parts.

Living in an apartment acts as a natural deterrent to accumulating lots of parts...

God help me when I move into a house.

I've got a wheel issue, but that's about it.

The Boss has limited how many bikes I can keep in the house, so I'm sticking to that rule for now.

Saddles. You need more saddles.

I've got a couple spare wheelsets and a couple spare buildkits. Because you never know.

Funny this topic comes up now. Yes. And I'm working on it. Have actually sold about $2500 worth of "overstock" in the last 2 weeks. Must liquidate. Daddy needs a new full suspension BMC carbon fiber mountain bike!

Seems more like a frame deficit problem to me.

Every time I start to accumulate too many bits, I feel the need to purge. That said, if you're trying to justify another bike, if you just so happen to have a lot of the right parts kicking around just collecting dust, it would be a darned shame not to get a new frame and put those parts to good use.

I am currently reducing 6 bins of parts, and these are small parts in addition to wheelsets and bikes. Many are items that I like and stocked up on before they wee discontinued.

As someone pointed out, usually it's a frame deficit. But I was up to 10 bikes, so the monies might go into new clothes. :-)

LOL.

It seems to me that the count in each category should include assembled bikes. If you have 5 asembled bikes and 4 extra wheelsets, then you should report 9 wheelsets.

However, even this is subject to interpretation. If you built a bike for your wife/son/daughter, do you count the parts on that bike? Does it depend if that bike is comingled with your own collection or if it is getting ridden regularly?

I to am in search of a "12 step program..." And yes, like you, all my bikes are built with rear derailleurs installed. These are the dreaded extras.

I know....I suffer from regular bouts of "the lazies" though. Most of the stuff I've sold has been to friends and fellow randonneurs.

I was a collector of parts for many years, until about 5 years ago when I sold off my treasured collection of NOS xtr m900 parts, and almost everything else. It felt great to get rid of the stuff and make some cash at the same time.
These days I try not to buy parts unless I really need them - although I do have a strong desire to keep extra pedals stashed in the basement. I have a few threaded stems too (saving them for the Bridgestone frame that I may find someday) and a bunch of handlebars...and a few nice seatposts...and a set of XC-pro thumbshifters.....

Why aren't we neighbors? ;) End all my sourcing dilemmas, just have to walk next door.

Are these pics prior to or after the $2.5k decrease in "overstocks"?

You guys and gals are making me feel good about myself :)

I bought a frame here a few months ago that is still half built - I am losing interest in it, which suggests that I never should've bought it. It'll be a cool bike once built, but it was an impulse buy.

For me, a project usually starts with an obsession to use some specific part. I had these old, used beaten 29er wheels laying around and now I am almost done building a monstercross bike - so stupid!! :)

So, that white Brooks saddle in the lower left hand corner of the 2nd last pic ...

Is that a Team Pro? What rails? What are you doing with it?

Steel chrome rails. Selling it to my friend this weekend. It's been sitting on a shelf for the past 2 or 3 years. It's time for it to go. He'll be riding it on Race Across The West, so it's going to a good home where it'll see lots of miles.

Yeah, my wife needs to see this, too! My weakness is the vintage stuff; DA 74XX, Superbe Pro, silver allloy campy, etc.

Just the other day I said to myself I need to do a spreadsheet and catalog everything.
