floyd's TT position caught my eye. it looks lower than some, and certainly a shorter reach. unconventional but i'm sure he wind-tunneled it. everyone is different, eh? (note: sorry about photo size...here's link to bigger shot: http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.php?id=photos/2006/features/phonak_training/SS08 )

i bet the wind tunnel dude said "zip your jersey up" ;)

looks like lots of weight on his elbows, hate to hold that position for 50+ km

It doesn't look too unlike Obree's tuck that was banned to me.

i like watching them during lunch

if a t.t. bar has a free buffett it's the place to be for lunch imho.

as for floyd's position....it's really weird. few other riders have their hands higher than their elbows but then again floyd is really weird,.

That position says "I want to WIN!" not "There is definitely enough room on my top tube for a steak and cheese."

His tt position reminds me of a lot of triathletes. Weird.

and are we letting a recent fetish with using photos as posts to derail every thread into a "can you top my photo" detour? many a photo is worth considerable less than a thousand words. just one guy's .02.

climb,
it took too long to read your post. Could you put up a photo that summarizes it?

Hahahahahahahahaha. Imagine his position if he had the forethought to have stuck it out with Discovery? Hahahahahahahahaha.

Yes! Watching a time trial is like riding on a trainer. Lots of pedalling, not much fun!

I agree. We are missing the point (sometimes) in an effort at cyber one-upmanship with our savy in finding the right pic to describe our sentiment. I will therefore use the power of word, not pics, for this post. [read: I couldn't find the pic within three searched on image.google.com]

If he gets any higher he will look like my beloved grandmother driving her land yacht around florida.

Ok, now everyone clse there eyes and think of an estelle getty sized Grandmother peering at you from beneath the top of her steering wheel.

. . . except the other way. His hands slope DOWN on his TT bars. Always thought that was a bit strange . . .

I don't see what's so bad about Floyd's position. Sure, no one else seems to be adopting it, but from an aerodynamic point of view, it looks good. The hands appear to be breaking the flow that would normally hit the vertical upper arms, and this is probably a good thing.

His position was tested in the Low Speed Wind Tunnel in San Diego. I was doing some commercial tests there a few weeks ago (in between their unending stream of bike tests) and talked to the guys about it. Of course they wouldn't say much about, claiming just to operate the tunnel and let the coaches handle the positioning. They did say that Floyd was surprising and fast.
