I have been considering this frame for some time, it was restored by these people http://www.twowheelsrestorations.com/ Don’t know much about them.

For the frame and fork anyone care to provide some feedback as to what the value of the frame and fork might be and the restoration quality.

What should I be looking for on a repaint, besides shinny?

Apologies for the insipid request, I am a recent convert to a classic bike purchase.

1900 bucks?? The problem with restorations is that if you arent going to keep them doesnt make any sense to spend that much money because at the time of selling it nobody is going to give you the money you are asking.

The paint job is well executed, no idea about the chroming but looks like is new aswell, that campagnolo group is not like the super high end and it is so easy to get rid off of that rust in the seatpost that IMO they screwed up there hehehe :)

IMO the guy is asking way too much for that bike. The frame alone maybe close to 1000 bucks but i would not pay more than 650 if I had the dough. The brand is good, columbus sl is good tubing, you wont get a bad bike but you have to consider that the guy is a shop, he will have shop prices.

Hope this helps.

ps: how much are they asking for the frame and fork? the chrome job is new aswell?

Thanks for the feedback ultraman6970, the asking price for the frame and fork is well under what you suggested. I am not interested in anything attached to the bike at present other than the frame and fork. The intention would be to build it up with my own choice of equipment. I have attached a picture of the frame before restoration and there appears to be little to no sign of rust in the seat tube area. The chrome appears to be original.

That frame was well sandblasted and stuff... way below 650?? not a bad deal then.

If the tape job on the head tube/top tube lug is indicative of their paintwork, I wouldn't pay them a whole lot of money for it. To me, that little bit sort of ruins the whole.

Agreed. That does not look like good work at all to me... at least if I was the painter/powdercoater(?) I would not present work like that to a client. High standards, I guess, but there's not that much to a bike -- details count.

there was a neon yellow 58cm marinoni frame on NH craigslist a few weeks back. $200 for frame and fork

Thanks to everyone for the feed back, the seller and I are still working on a deal, seems like an honest seller with a nice frame that deserves a good home.

Keep and eye on Ebay, Pinkbike and Kijiji. Also, Marinoni sometimes get forgotten about on Ebay since the market on Kijiji and other online sources is good out East, you may luck out with a good deal (I did!). You can find something similar to that with good original paint from $200.00 to $400.00 for a road frameset, or possibly even with a full groupset.

I agree, about $650-$750 would be the most I would pay for the mentioned bike.

Edit: Also keep in mind Marinoni does repaints for VERY reasonable prices.

Thanks ckamp, coincidentally this sale originally came up on Pinkbike so I must be at least partially looking in the right places.

That restoration looks absolutely fine. The paint jobs from that era typically weren't nearly as perfect as people like to think. Marinoni is painting a bike of mine right now, and their prices are very reasonable. Cool bike.

I think these quotes are VERY high - restorations typically lower the value. It's a tier two SL frame...restored. If this were on eBay, I'd guess value at around 400-500, and that might be on the high side.

While I am sure that Marinoni rides like a dream, that is a bit much. I sold my 1990 all-Chorus Special for $650. I've never seen one go for more than $1,000.

So, I am the guy that did the restoration. Had to wait till my account was validated. Just want to thank everyone for all the good and not so good comments.

It is very difficult to achieve this type of finish. I've seen other more "famous" frame restorers have a hard time with perfect transitions at the lugs. At the end of the day, if someone seeks the utmost perfection they will be paying a lot of money. This one wasn't 100%, but at the end of the day it is pretty good.

Most frame builders charge quite a bit more for this finish. Pelizzoli in Italy up charges almost $300 more for it.

Mine was not sandblasted. I chemically stripped it as it is not as damaging. After stripping the frame was cleaned inside and out. A Zinc Chromate primer was used as to inhibit corrosion. The paint is a single stage Poly-Eurethane paint that was sprayed on, not powder coated. After the paint was applied it was hand wet sanded to a smooth finish and then polished with three different grits go rubbing compound before the decals were applied. Two coats of pure carnauba wax finished the outside, and a rust inhibitor sprayed inside.

I understand that $1850 may be pricey on the website, I don't need to sell it. I put it up because I have 10 bikes at home and my wife is getting mad. Lol.

The OP saw it on pink bike. If you check there you'll see the asking price is $1300 Canadian dollars which is about $1200USD, or $600 for the frame fork and headset.

The OP and I will chat on the phone tomorrow. Hopefully we can make a deal, but if we are worlds apart then no hard feelings. It seems he is a fair guy.

Pietro

I have to say that Marc and I had a great conversation over the phone tonight, the way any sale should be done, by voice and not typing. We came to a fair price on the frame, well within what everyone was suggesting here.

I have to admit, I overpriced the bike on my website because I wasn't in a hurry to sell it.

I am glad that it is going to a good home. The paint work may not be 100% perfect, but 95% sure ain't bad...lol

Marc is a stand up, stellar guy and I am very glad he and I were able to make a deal.

Now on to my next project.

Cheers everyone.

Excellent bikes, I have the same model, but that's rather expensive for an early eighties Marinoni. Around these parts they are thicker than fleas on a junkyard dog. $350 for a frame in VG condition, $700-900 fully equipped with decent gear.
Nice bike though.

So we are close then.

$350 USD is about $400 CDN today. We settled on $500 CDN for the fully restored frame and fork with seat post and seat binder bolt.
