Experience with Giro d'Italia Tours?

If anyone has ridden with a tour group for the Giro, or ridden in the area during the Giro, or has any other experience with the race, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

I'm thinking about taking a trip over for this year's race, maybe with a tour group (Trek, Thomson, etc.), or on my own. Any advice would be welcome, thank you.

We were in Italy visiting my daughter (Rotary exchange student) in '06. Caught the Giro in Cinque Terre, and then again in Bolzano, in the Dolomites. We used public transportation (trains, buses), carried backpacks and just had a great time.

Although... our only cycling was renting city bikes… so can't speak to the logistics of doing any serious cycling while you're there.
