Asked same question here a few years back and was pointed to davek new york. Bought a duet and haven't looked back. Also got a solo for the wife. Lifetime warranty is nice.

"m happy to state that I have NO recent experience with such things. The Brits make some "brollies" that are passed on through generations because they are so good and are totally rebuildable. Maybe one of the finest men's stores in SF offers good ones.

Good ones are probably available to thieves at the SF Opera. :)

Rain or Shine is the best traditional umbrella shop in NYC. Almost like a shop transplanted from 'ol Britannia and plopped into Midtown. Rebuildable brollies sold there and they can repair anything short of the Rain Storm Specials that you buy on the street for $10 that are designed for a half-life of 15 minutes.

When I was working in the Boston and taking the subway (meant plenty of walking in the elements on both ends of my commute), I had very good luck with ShedRain umbrellas. I accidentally left a huge ShedRain golf umbrella that I had had for 4 years at an event, and was super pissed when I returned to find it gone.

Currently have another version from them, which is more compact.

I'd buy this brand again.

The best umbrella is a hat or cap, or a raincoat with a hood. Cheap umbrellas break and expensive ones get lost. Save yourself the aggro.;)

I wonder if this thread will become as long as the knife one...

Agree, nice wind resistant umbrella for the price. We don't have a lot of heavy storms here but when we do the wind is your umbrellas greatest enemy.

Last one. Don't know why I have umbrella info I don't even own one! The local backpacking guy was showing this off one day and really loved it

I also got the DaveK after the thread here a couple of years ago, and while it was better than generic umbrellas it was not quite tough enough against strong winds. On more research (Amazon reviews are good for this), I found Tumi umbrellas, which don't generally make it into umbrella reviews, and have been very pleased.

I need something that fits in my bag for commuting to work, so that limits my universe of possibilities.

Typical problem for fighter pilots? :)

You only need to look to the British for a decent umbrella:

I agree with Bobde1234.
I dished out for a Sens and also a Windbrella last year.

I don't lose umbrellas but they break on me. Even the $30 ones that the retailers claimed to be robust. So far so good with these wind resistant ones.

Prince Charles loves his Swaine Adeney Brigg, and they're only about $500!

Yes, but it was originally a gift to Albert from Victoria. :)

When in doubt, I always refer to my favorite online product review site: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-shedrain-windjammer-is-the-best-umbrella/

Looks like someone "misunderestimated" the wind.
