View Full Version : Powdercoaters in Texas that can handle a bike?

I recently picked up a RB-2 as a kick-around project bike. The paint has definitely seen better days and I'd like to address it. As great as it would be to send the bike to Spectrum for a nice powder finish, it just isn't worth dropping $400 to have it done there.

Have any of my fellow Texas peeps worked with a powdercoater here in our great State that they would recommend? I'm looking for a shop that understands the intricacies of powder on a bike (thin enough application to not lose lug lines and the protection of threads, HT/BB faces, brake bolt interfaces, drop-out faces, etc).

Thanks!

I used Brooks Industrial Coating (http://bic-texas.com/powder-coating/) a number of years ago to refinish a Bontrager 24 BMX bike.

They did good work and it was very affordable.

Nice to see you out on the road today!

Great to see you as well. Your Crumpton looks sharp!

I was looking for someone in the Metroplex and found a guy in Manor who has done hundreds of bikes. I may have the name in my office, but you could probably find it in a search.

I think that would be Accent Powder Coating (http://www.accentpowdercoating.com/Bicycles.html) in Manor.

Thanks again for the info. Interestingly, I used both of these guys a number of years ago and the results left a lot to be desired. I had an old Raleigh (whichever the low-end 531 bike was from the early/mid 70s) and a Trek 560 done. Both jobs were terrible. Very heavy application of powder that washed out luglines and pantographs (on the Trek). There were heavy runs in the coating on both and debris baked into the powder. The Raleigh had threading that wasn't protected and was coated. I left the Raleigh at the one shop and built up and sold the Trek to a less picky buyer that was very happy with the job (it was a nice, shiny ivory color).

However, both of the jobs were back in 2004/2005. Maybe I should give the guys in Manor another shot.

Top Koat in Kennedale did a bike for me and several friends. The quality is good, but not outstanding.

tex-pal, I know you said powdercoat...but might be worth checking out Nick Crumpton, I think he does his own painting...I think. It might cost more and it's probably not powder, but worth a try. He might know somebody who know somebody too.

Thanks for the suggestion Wei! I saw one of Nick's recent paint jobs on Friday (jscottyk's newly refinished Crumpton) and it looked fantastic. My understanding is that he's set up a paint booth and is doing his own paint again.

However, I'm not sure an RB-2 is worth spending the $$$ that a Crumpton repaint would command (if he would even consider painting anything other than his own bikes).

I think it's easy for one to decide a bike of lesser market value isn't worth spending money on. Instead of thinking immediate market value, I'd suggest you consider the personal value. How long do you plan on keeping it? How much do you enjoy riding it? What do you expect from the bike? I've refinished some frames many would consider a pos, but the owner valued them and realized personal value. I'd reconsider taking it to get a decent paint job, either powder or wet.

Great perspective. However, the RB-2 is new (to me) and there really isn't an emotional connection to the bike. I'm just viewing it as a solid platform to shine up and hang a variety of parts on that are in the garage.

Very pretty! That ivory or a X0-1ish orange are the colors that I'm envisioning for the bike. However, it would be a stripped down road build with silver DA9 speed stuff and wider (30s) tires.

Yes, Nick recently brought paint back in-house. I just posted a few pics of the above referenced refinish (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showpost.php?p=1478951&postcount=20). Needless to say, I am very very pleased with the results.
