View Full Version : The Best (Brimmed) Thin Winter Cycling Cap?

I'm looking for something that will keep my ears warm, that will fit under my helmet (i.e. super thin!), and that has a brim like your typical cycling cap (I never leave home without one!)...

What are my options?

I have a Hincapie Arenberg cap that I have been very happy with that checks the boxes as far as what you are looking for.

I'm a big fan of the Rapha winter hat. But might be too thick for your requirements.

Anyone have the new Giro Ambient cap?
It looks to have a smaller bill.
I find that most caps have to long of a bill once my helmet pushes it down.

The only piece of Rapha I use is their winter hat and I actually really like it. It is not crazy thin bit should fit under your helmet just fine. It also doesn't have a button on top like some of my older winter caps that can press into your helmet and make things uncomfortable.

I enjoy my Walz Cycling Wool Flannel Winter Cap. (http://www.walzcaps.com/caps_winter.html) Available in some snappy patterns if black isn't exactly what you want.
My wife refers to it as my "jaunty cycling cap". ;)

Walz is always a good choice for any cycling cap needs.

You might check with Rothera as well. I know Gary is making some winter stuff now.

I've been using a different Giro cap, not sure which model, but it looks a lot like this "Merino Winter Cap":

Mine has the modest, but effective, bill, plus a tech-y lining that works really well across a wide range of temps. Ability to roll up the ear flaps under the helmet is a nice feature, too.
Rapha has a similar design, only much more epic.

I have a couple of these and love them. Warm and fit under a helmet no problem.

I've got a Randi Jo Rivendell be-logo'd cap (http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/ac10.htm). It's quite thin and remarkably warm, with an earflap that folds out. The brim is on the larger size, comparable to Walz caps. If you're not a Rivendell fan, check out her site: http://www.randijofab.com/

45Nrth Greazy is my favorite.

Warm. Better ear coverage than other winter caps.

I dig this so much, it's my winter hat on and off the bike...super thin and warm:

Look at the last photo in the slide show here, this particular Rapha cap seems to have a shorter brim:

Same here. Nice hat, thin for a wool cap, L/XL size fits my large melon very well and more modestly priced than some. I got the charcoal one.

I am a fan of the Rapha Belgian winter hat (the only Rapha in my wardrobe) and for really cold days the Assos Robocap. Cinelli just came out with a cool looking one: http://www.wingedstore.com/caps/italo-79-wind-tex-cap--112.html

I have to say that that Paceline Cap is one small little sucker. It's like putting a tourniquet around your forehead!

Do any of the mentions above have outside loops that hold glasses. I know the Assos fuguHelm does but wondered if there are cheaper options available.
