View Full Version : Do you use a trainer tire for rollers?

I haven't used rollers in years but might be picking it up again. I generally have a dedicated tire for use in a trainer, but it seems like rollers would generate less heat/wear. Am I right on this?

Yeah, not needed. Rollers don't seem to cause any excess wear.

sigh. I have a pair of kreitler rollers in my amazon cart... I really should pull the trigger on these.

Old or last seasons tires are all that are needed. Pump 'em up though.

we all have older used up tires we don't necessarily want to ride on the road. why not use one of those? i had an ultremo with lots of treadlife but a small sidewall tear i booted up to get home. it seemed to ride fine but i wouldn't trust it in the future so i retired it. would have been great for a trainer.

Rollers are far easier on my tires than trainers, in my experience.

Rollers focus wear at tread center, so rolling a nice tire seems dumb.

I should have exposed my real motivation for asking this:

My new build/pride-and-joy (http://forums.thepaceline.net/showthread.php?t=141127) is my first Shimano 11 bike, and it currently wears tubular tires. I have a dedicated trainer wheel that I've historically used, but it is 10s. I'm aware of the workaround here (monkey with the RD, throw on 10 of the 11 cogs, call it a day). Maybe I'll do that short term, but in the long run it's a PITA. Sounds like I can buy some time until I get a new freehub for my trainer wheel.

I ride different bikes on the rollers, but usually one bike gets most of the miles. Variety and using e-motions makes it a lot more interesting for me. I'm on 'em at least five days a week during the winter.

I pump the tires up to 110 psi (compared to 80-90 on the road).

I've never noted any significant tire wear, certainly nothing compared to riding the similar amount of hours on the road.

it's a completely different story if you're riding one of those (inferior) trainers…

Yes, I have a trainer tire.

It's the same color as the handlebar tape on my indoor bike -- what was I going to do?!

Special to MattTuck: Yeah buy the rollers! Rollers are the only trainer.

A lot of people ride their tubs on rollers with zero issues. Don't worry about it.

I use my road tires on the rollers. Up the pressure a bit and its fine.

for roller duty, I use my back-up bike which is fitted with some Conti Gators.

I'd love to wear those out and replace them with some 4000S, but so far no luck...apparently, rollers are pretty easy on tires.
