As a high school student in 1961, Al Satterwhite started working for The St. Petersburg Times in Florida.

He picked up freelance work for United Press International while continuing to work at the Times. Establishing himself as a talented photographer, he shot for major magazines and corporate clients: Car & Driver, Fortune, Life, Newsweek, American Express, Coke, Kodak – the list goes on.

Satterwhite’s latest project, “The Racers” is a limited edition printed edition as well as a digital book stemming from his coverage of endurance racing for Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek and Life magazine between 1963 and 1973, along with personal effects from his career.....

....“It was pretty loose in those days, also very dangerous; I was almost killed a couple of times by getting myself boxed in with nowhere to go when a car spun off the track; or in the pits where I had gas accidentally thrown in my face.”

Satterwhite said he’s trying to bring a bit of that excitement and drama back for his readers.....

William,
I have been a car nut to a fault, all my life. When I was in high school in 1968, my friends and I drove to Monterrey and watched the Can-am cars at Laguna Seca. Later, I remember Peter Revson driving the Chapperal .I remember the hillside north of the "corkscrew" packed with a hillside of red Ferraris. In 1978 I bought a Berlinetta Lusso that a guy had for sale at the historic car races at Laguna in 1979. Anyway, thanks for giving us that site.

Thanks for posting this, William. Reminds me of "The Speed Merchants".

Glad to share. I have a soft spot for motor sports. My dad was involved in motor racing so as a young kid I spent a fair amount of time around the pits. A little later a friends family was involved in limited hydroplane racing so I spent a few summers on the barge working the clock or the flags.

Being competitive on bikes grew out of pretending to be racing cars or motorcycles. We would set up race courses, obstacle courses, and drag strips and race each other all the time. When I finally got into competitive cycling it was like being a little kid all over again. Bike handling skills and the killer instinct were already intact. Fun stuff. Books like this always bring all that back for me.

Can-Am cars were the coolest cars ever made. I loved those McLarens.

Those Jaguar E-Types have always been among my favourite cars.

One of my favorite memories was going to Sebring around 1965. Drove down from N.C. State as a sophomore, never saw a car race before. The cars there were cool...MGs were on the same course with Ferrari prototypes, etc. I got up early to see the Le Mans start (drivers line up across from the cars...race across the track to their cars and drive away). Someone invited me to go up on scaffolding. Took pictures of the start from left to right. A friend edited the pictures and used it for a montage...it was like the whole start of the race was caught in one picture. Lots of famous racers...Jim Clark drove a Lotus Cortina ( I believe), etc.

Awesome book. It's on my Christmas list. That was an amazing time for cars. To think that 3 icons were introduced 50 years ago (E-type, 911, and Mustang) at the same time is incredible, too.
