Hi guys/gals.

In Dallas, and We just got nailed by a winter wave of cold weather...guess it is sweeping cross country right now. I had Ice freezing on my windshield as I was driving home...On the highway.

I know its not that bad, as I came home I started watching the news and it seems my Neighbors to the west have Colds much worse than we do here in the south.
Please be safe out there, for the next few days. :fight:

my folks are on the road heading out to Arizona for the winter and had to pull over to side of the road in Midland. They were hit by that same exact storm and were doing 20MPH on HGHY 20 with ice/snow mix. Nasty.

Hope everyone makes it out ok.

-9'F this morning. The dog's face was white with frost after our walk. Should be Moonlandering soon, but walking slowly now due a bout of old-man ailment-- my first adventure with Sciatica. Not recommended. At least the house is warm...

I hops they are okay. Midland is a good size town to stop in, but that's still out in the boons though, they are never prepared for that type of cold. If they are there they may be stuck for a couple of days...

It was in the 80s here in San Juan, PR. I was in a meeting this morning and my phone sounded a flood alarm (!!!). Had no idea what was going on, but the sky was dark and it was raining heavy. Drove a co-worker to another location. Traffic was stop and go. Saw a drowned Mercedes in 3' of water. Saw a tractor trailer make a U-turn across the median strip. It was wild. No snow...found out that we are here in the rainy season.

NW Montana will be -13F tonight. With the wind chill makes it -30F.
We need an extended period (2 weeks or so) of frigid temps to kill the insects.
After the all the Pine Beetles and Hornets freeze to death, it can go back riding weather. :)

-26f last night.

Ouch. When it's that cold and the sun has set, what % of the time does your furnace run? Obviously one needs good insulation, but still, that's a huge temp differential between inside and outside, regardless of your R values.

Depends on how cold you keep the house and insulation. The rental I live in isn't great insulation-wise but has a new-ish furnace. We keep the house fairly cool at night and sleep with two HUGE down comforters and two dogs on the bed for warmth.

Needless to say it was balls cold to get out of bed and will be tomorrow morning. -21f and counting now.

From last weekend here in St. Paul. It was in the 20s or so.

Right now it is 4 below zero and it should stay this way through the weekend.

BTW We are riding to the Mike Phillips benefit on Sunday at the Modern Cafe in Mpls. He is a local CX racer that was injured at a race a couple of weeks ago. Beers and brats available. :)

PM me for details if interested.

I bought these Sidi Diablos on our local CL a little over a year ago.

They looked like the guy had never ridden twenty feet in them.

They were a half size big, but I could easily fit wool socks so they were warm and comfy.

I will ride through the winter with these, but I might add my Pearl Izumi booties this weekend.

Just too darn cold for most footwear when it dips below -10 F. imho

I'm in Dallas too, and am enjoying the ultra-rare site-closing for our offices today.

The Honda Fit wouldn't make it out of our subdivision this morning (too much ice, too light, tires are ill-equipped), but my wife's AWD Murano did OK for a short-&-careful jaunt to the store. Wouldn't care to attempt a normal commute today.

Looking forward to taking the Pug out for a spin in the conditions it was actually intended for.

I wouldn't say 9" nailed Eugene today. We (north of Eugene - from what I understand, the snow was heavier the further north of Eugene - to an extent - you went) had that 9" by Noon today, and it continued to snow continuously until about 6:00 PM. Unusual, certainly, here on the valley floor, but actually quite enjoyable. Spent just under 6 hours out of the house today wandering around town on a snow excursion with the 4-year-old - special time!

Does sound only a bit abnormal for the Sierra foothills, which only makes our actual/forecast streak of lows of 19°, 15°, 14° (today), 8°, 18° sound even more abnormal for us.

One of reasons we left Sunriver 1-2 days early yesterday and headed back to Eugene was the streak in Sunriver of -2°, -7°, -3°, -11°, -3° for the same period scared my wife.

I said psychologically not metabolically. How about this one? Imagine bundling up to get the newspaper on an early morning at 7:30 a.m. with the temperature at a frigid -4 degrees.

Just two minutes later as you are letting Fido have a potty break on the lawn, you notice that the frigid air you walked out the door into is not so frigid anymore. You look at your thermometer and the temperature has shot up to 45 degrees. That's right, a temperature increase of 49 degrees in just two minutes!

But wait, that's not the end of this wild morning weather story. After the temperature climbs all the way to 54 degrees at 9 a.m., it crashes down again 58 degrees in 27 minutes to -4 degrees once again.

Sounds like a dream, but it's not. All of this happened in Spearfish, S.D. on January 22, 1943. http://www.weather.com/news/5-extreme-temperature-drops-20130118

Bar-mitts are such an advancement in cold-weather gear. They make all the difference. My Lake boots do a nice job for the most part but they had me wanting for something warmer after an hour. Had it not been for my toes gradually becoming frozen I could've stayed out there for hours in those conditions.

I planned to stay inside today but instead I managed to make it out in -2º weather for 14 miles of snow-packed trails along the Minnesota River bottoms. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/onekgguy/11263855924/)

Bar-mitts are such an advancement in cold-weather gear. They make all the difference. My Lake boots do a nice job for the most part but they had me wanting for something warmer after an hour. Had it not been for my toes gradually becoming frozen I could've stayed out there for hours in those conditions.

Nice!

We are going over to cheer on the senior men's group this afternoon at the Minnesota State CX championships at Bassett Creek.

Still too darned cold for me to ride the forty mile round trip, but I'm sure I'll still get a taste of the cold standing out there for an hour in single digit temps. Not to mention we are supposed to receive another 2-4" of fresh snow during the race. :)

More days of deep freeze going here. Was riding the SS just before sunset and snapped my chain. First off: ouch. Next up was the quick trailside repair at 9 degrees and fading daylight. Ended up walk/run/scootering the bike back to the trailhead. My bare hands wouldn't work and dealing with the half link was making it a real challenge. Need to rethink what I've got in the pack for chain repairs.

A plus for the outing, the sunset was fantastic.

Yeah, you definitely don't want to ride and then stand around for too long before you get going again.

It was actually quite nice out there today with the light snow falling. I'd have loved to have had the day off and been able to get some time in on the river trails!

All you guys be careful out there. I know many of you are experienced in dealing with sub zero cold, but stuff happens sometimes you can't predict. Don't be too brave. Here on Florida, I could fall, and be left alone for a while, and I might get hot and thirsty, but not likely to die. Not so with sub zero weather.

Ralph...my big fear when riding in the sub freezing temps is that I might get a puncture a few miles from home, or end up in a ditch on a back road and Mrs. RW won't answer the phone...

Time to get rid of caller ID ;)
